Update: Candidates Take to the Polls on Municipal Election Day

Voter turnout has been mixed, candidates say.

Denny Lewis said after 60 years as a Crescent resident, he decided to run today as a write-in candidate for the township's Board of Commissioners. 

"It's a long shot, I know, but I figured I'd come out today and give it a shot," Lewis said between talking to voters outside the , which serves as a polling location. Lewis is the township's emergency management coordinator and works for US Airways.  

Candidates and campaign workers today are staked out at polling locations in Moon and Crescent, where many said voter turnout has been moderate.

Samuel Tranter, a candidate for Moon Area School Board on the Citizens for Education Ticket, said he saw an uptick in senior citizens taking to the polls early this morning. 

"I would say [turnout was] almost 3 to 1 senior citizens throughout the morning," said Tranter outside the

Bill Napierski, a Democratic candidate for the , said the upcoming Walmart construction on University Boulevard will be at the top of voters' minds in the Moon board of supervisors race. 

"It's the , it's the , those are the things people were asking about when I was knocking on doors," Napierski said. 

Standing outside Hyde Elementary, Cheryl Olszewski, who was campaigning for the Citizens for Education ticket, said by 3 p.m. the turnout there had surpassed 50 percent.

Mark Scappe, an incumbent candidate for the Moon Area School Board, said he did not expect voter turnout to be robust in this election.

"We knew it would be low," said Scappe, interviewed outside Hyde Elementary. He said he and his fellow Democratic nominees plan to gather after the polls close to watch election results.

"Well, you're always a little bit nervous," he said. "You never know how these things will turn out."
