Moon Board of Supervisors Question Closing of Township Air Base

The board called for military officials to reconsider the closing of the Moon-based air wing.

The Moon Township Board of Supervisors last night denounced the planned closure of the 911th Airlift Wing. 

"We need citizens to get behind the movement to save the base," said Supervisor Jim Vitale at the meeting. 

The Air Force announced plans earlier this year to the Moon-based airlift wing and eliminate each of its 1,100 military and 250 civilian jobs as a part of an effort to reduce the Air Force's 2013 budget by $8.7 billion.

The board last night adopted a resolution expressing to the , which will be finalized in 2013. The base has been targeted in the reductions because of the of its eight C-130 aircraft, which are some of the oldest tactical aircraft still flying in the military. 

Board President Marv Eichersaid the closure could have a "devastating" impact on the township.

The resolution will be sent to appropriate members of the Congress and officials in the U.S. Department of Defense

  • The board appointed Joseph Seman to the Riverview Sanitary Authority.
  • The board approved a sidewalk improvement agreement with Heartland Restaurant Group for the proposed on Carnot Road. 
  • The board officially changed the name of Moon Pond, in to , in honor of former township supervisor Edwin Nelson.
