Moon Developer Can Again Receive Building Permits After Shoring Up Landslide Threat

Moon officials approved issuing building permits to a local developer after the completion of a years-long landslide threat.

A Moon-based housing developer can again receive building permits from the township after resolving a landslide threat near Flaughterty Run and Becks Run roads.

The Moon Township Board of Supervisors approved a measure to again issue building permits to NewPointe Realty, developer of the Autumn Woods housing plan.

Moon Planning Director Adam McGurk said the company's contractors have completed the year-long remediation of a landslide off Flaughterty Run Road.

Township officials said an improperly installed stormwater basin at the foot of the 34-home development pushed sediment downward toward Flaugherty Run Road, uprooting trees, eroding land and threatening to dam Flaugherty Run. No homes were threatened by the sliding hillside.

McGurk said the hillside no longer poses a hazard to the area. The stormwater basin was installed in 2007.

In 2008, Moon's Board of Supervisors moved to withhold future building permits and bond reductions from NewPointe until the hillside's repair.

Moon supervisors lifted that ban in a 4-to-0 vote last week.

"We're happy with the progress (of the remediation)," said Moon Engineer Malcolm Petroccia at the board's Nov. 28 meeting. "The retention pond is working well."
