Township Unveils Memorial for Moon Police

The community will hold a dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m. today, the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Moon Township Police today will receive a memorial alongside the township's Sept. 11 and veterans' monuments.

Police in the township spearheaded the effort for the new memorial, which commemorates current and veteran members of the department.

"It all started last year after the 9/11 dedication that the township had, and some of the officers said 'why not us?'" said Moon Sgt. Doug Busch. "There's one for vets and one for the fire department and so a group of us got together and approached the township."

Today's ceremony will include a remembrance of the township's Sept. 11 memorial and remarks from Chief Leo McCarthy. The event is open to the public.

Retired and current police officers in the township will be present for the ceremony.

Police in the department had a hand in creating the memorial, which will include the township's seal, Busch said.

"We designed to it so it fits in with the other memorials and will be very similar," Busch said. "The stone itself is for all the employees of the Moon Township Police department, whether they be a dispatcher, a clerk or an officer."

The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Moon Municipal Building's memorial garden on Beaver Grade Road. Check back with Patch tomorrow for full coverage.
