A review of the week's biggest stories for Feb. 13.

The Moon Township zoning hearing board rejected a request that it repeal an occupancy permit  issued for a group home for mentally ill residents on Greenlea Drive at its Thursday meeting.

Venus Thompson, who lives next door to the proposed group home,  the permit issued by the township to  Thursday night. The Homestead-based agency sought the permit in order to open and operate a residence for four men with mental illnesses in a single-family home at 162 Greenlea Drive. 

The board issued its ruling Thursday night after an executive session and a contentious three-hour meeting. Its ruling may be appealed to the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas.

Donna Milanovich, superintendent for the Moon Area School District, said the district must re-evaluate its budget in light of proposed drastic cuts in state education funding

Gov. Tom Corbett unveiled a $27.3 billion proposed budget for Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Milanovich said the reductions were more severe than the district had anticipated.

She said the proposed budget will account for $1.45 million in funding cuts to the district this year. In addition, the governor's elimination of accountability block grants will result in another $1.2 million in reductions to Moon schools.

The Moon Police department reported that it made more than a dozen underage drinking arrests last weekend at the Polo Apartment complex on Beaver Grade Road.

Milanovich released a letter to parents this week confirming that water entered two equipment rooms on the building's lower level on Feb. 28. She said the water entered from exterior electrical boxes that bring electrical cables into those rooms.

"Unfortunately, during the heavy rain, water accumulated in the area around the boxes, forcing rainwater into the conduits [in the electrical boxes]," she said in the letter. 

The  came short in their bid for a third-consecutive Northeast Conference Championship Wednesday night, falling to Long Island University 85-82 in a close overtime contest.
