National Weather Service Reports Record Snowfall

Classes canceled in the Moon Area School District.

The in Moon reports that 9 inches of snow accumulated at its Shafer Road offices from about 6 p.m. to midnight yesterday, setting a record for the date.

John Darnley, a meterologist for the service, said it was a record-breaking evening for the Pittsburgh region. The previous record for the date -- 3 inches -- was set in 1929, Darnley said.

The snow temporarily stopped Port Authority bus service in the region and closed the today. Classes at Robert Morris University have also been delayed.

Darnley said the snowfall exceeded the service's predictions.

"Earlier in the day, we were thinking 2 to 3 inches," Darnley said. "And then we put it as 3 to 6. And then we got 9."

Darnley said no snowfall is predicted for today, but the Pittsburgh region could experience more winter weather later this week.

"It looks like on Thursday and Friday we could see accumulation, but it's going to warm up as well so there's a chance it might be rain," Darnley said.
