Get Involved: Run a Marathon for the Salvation Army

Patch explains how you can run in the sold-out race and raise money for a great cause.

Looking to run in the Pittsburgh Marathon this year? Try competing on Team Salvation Army.

The race may be sold out, but runners can still sign up for free entry to the marathon if they run on behalf of the Salvation Army in Western Pennsylvania. More than 10,000 runners are expected to take part in the marathon on May 15.

Runners for the charitable organization will also attend a pre-race pasta party and get a free Salvation Army T-shirt.

Here's how to participate: Runners can reserve a spot in the race by fundraising for the organization at three levels. Full-marathon runners must raise $500; half-marathon runners must raise $300, and relay team participants must raise $750 -- 100 percent of the entrance fee is donated directly to the Salvation Army's Western Pennsylvania division to support youth programming.

To register for the event, contact Melissa Wagner, Divisional Director of Fundraising, at 412-446-1644 melissa_wagner@use.salvationarmy.org.
