Five Things You Need to Know This Week

A rundown of the week's soon-to-be hot stories for Feb. 28.

Plunge into your Monday with our list of the week's top headlines -- before they happen.

1. Moon Area School Board meets tonight. 

The will hold a workshop meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in the new high school building. A reminder for those who didn't attend last time: The meetings are now held in the high school's board meeting room near the cafeteria.

The board will vote on a new district calendar to account for a snow day on Feb. 22.  In December, the district its calendar to accommodate 13 days of classes missed during a teachers strike.

The academic year is currently scheduled to end on June 10. The district previously had designated April 22 as its only make-up day for class cancellation.

2. Hearing scheduled for accused carjacker.

Joseph Manna, 28, is scheduled to appear in Coraopolis District Court for a preliminary hearing. The McKees Rocks man is charged with two aggravated assaults and a carjacking in Moon. 

Manna's hearing has been twice. He was scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 15, but the hearing was canceled due to the absence of a court reporter.  

Moon police said that in January Manna rear-ended two vehicles on Spring Run and Brodhead roads, causing one woman to crash her car into a utility pole. Following the crash, Manna fled and approached another woman about using her cell phone. He pulled the woman from her car and stole her Mini Cooper, which he drove to West Viriginia. No one was injured in the  incidents.

3. Moon Board of Supervisors scheduled to meet. 

The Moon Board of Supervisors will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Moon Township Municipal building. Check back with Patch for coverage of the meeting. 

4. Pick up your prom dress at the Moon Township Public Library. 

Call a limo and order up your corsage: Prom season has arrived in Moon.

will hold its first prom dress swap at 12 p.m. on March 5 at the library. You can join in and get a free, used dress or donate an old one. 

The library is accepting gently used and formal wear through March 1. Participants will be able to exchange an old dress for another at the swap.

5. WPIAL championships held throughout this week. 

It's that time of year again: Winter sports playoff season. 

Watch your favorite Moon area sports teams vie for WPIAL titles throughout the week. Moon Area High School's wrestling team will take on Canon-McMillan tonight at home. The time has not been announced. Co-ed swimming playoffs, meanwhile, will take place Thursday at Trees Hall at the University of Pittsburgh
