The Beer Store Moves to Ambridge after Pub Sale

The former Trivia Pub building is sold to an Akron, OH, investor.

will reopen in Ambridge after the sale of the former Trivia Pub building on University Boulevard.

John Scanlon, former manager of and owner of the building that housed the bar and adjoining beer retailer, said his business partner, Frank Cullen, planned to reopen The Beer Store in Ambridge in the coming months.

Scanlon had owned and operated the former bar for more than 30 years.

"No, there are no plans to reopen [Trivia Pub elsewhere] now," Scanlon said.

More than a year after Trivia Pub, Scanlon sold the building on Jan. 19 to Akron, OH-based LRC AZ Investors at a sale price of $619,750.

Though the building served as a pub for more than 60 years, Scanlon said he was unsure of future plans for the property. LRC AZ Investors could not be reached for comment.

Developers from Nashville-based Autozone had presented to the Moon in 2010 to demolish the building and construct an auto parts retail store on the property, located across from campus.

Scanlon said plans for the new Autozone deteriorated after more than 18 months of negotiations with the company. He received a letter of intent to purchase the property Dec. 1, 2010, from Autozone Inc., but the sale remained in for much of 2011.

"It was funny," Scanlon said. "They had me tied up for like 18 months and they had changed their minds once over the summer. They don't really tell you what's going on. I don't know if there will be an Autozone there or not."
