Business Spotlight: Moon Friends Launch 'O.C.D' Organizing

Hollie Polen said the idea came to her about a year ago when she was in between jobs. 

"I was going through and organizing things for my family and I thought, 'I love doing this so much that I should get paid for it,'" she said. 

So Polen and friend Janelle Biemel, both of Moon Township, decided to turn their knack for keeping things tidy into a new business called Orderly, Detailed and Creative Organizing & Consulting—O.C.D. Organizing for short. 

Armed with an eye for keeping things organized, the 1999 Moon Area High School grads launched the business weeks ago. Their services are simple: Have a cluttered closet or home office in disarray? O.C.D. Organizing wants to help you get it together. 

"We'll organize anything and everything," Biemel said. "Home, home office, small businesses, photos." 

The childhood friends said they've bonded over their mutual affinity for keeping things in orderly and neat.  Biemel said the plan for O.C.D. Organizing came together within the last year. She had a child, Pollen moved into an apartment, and the two worked with siblings and friends, helping them move and downsize their own homes. 

Going into the business of professional organizing started to make sense, she said.

"We've been best friends since we were in diapers," Biemel said. "And we're both the same way—we believe that everything should sort of have its place in a home." 

Polen and Biemel will meet with individuals to discuss organization techniques, and help go through everything from unkempt apartments to piles of photographs, finding a spot for everything and a system for even the most befuddled clients. 

"As far as the home or personal space, it's really all about de-stressing the person," Polen said. "It's about creating a system. So when they come home they can say, 'Okay, this is where the mail goes.' You want things to be seamless and smooth from the time you walk into your house." 

Biemel said they'll work with clients to find an organizational structure best suited for their personality. 

She has tough advice for those looking to straighten up their home or office. 

"Purge," Biemel said. "If you want to get organized, just start making piles. Figure out what you need, what you don't need and go through the 'don't use' pile and start throwing things out."
