Moon Area School Board Cuts Taxes But Maintains Revenue

On Monday, the board approved a $63.7 million budget and lowered the millage rate.

Moon Area School Board voted Monday to decrease the real estate tax rate from 21.3 to 17.99 mills and adopt a $63.67 million budget for the 2013-14 school year.

The new tax rate means that the property tax bill for a $155,000 home—the median value in the school district—will be $2,790, the (Beaver County) timesonline reports.

According to the website, the 7,399 Moon and Crescent township property owners who filed Act 1 homestead exemption forms will have their tax bills reduced by $129.29 because of the distribution of state gambling revenues.

Even with the lower millage rate, the school district will receive nearly the same level of revenue it did this year due to the changes in the Allegheny County property reassessments.

Board member Jerry Testa was the only board member to vote against lowering taxes. He contended that the tax rates should be raised to 18.34 mills, the maximum increase permitted under the Act 1 Index.
