Battling Breast Cancer: A Moon Woman's Story

A Moon Township woman shares her breast cancer story with Patch.

  Moon Township resident Beth Lehmier was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2010. Throughout her treatment, she documented her fight with the disease on her blog, Lehmier.Blogspot.com. Below is an an excerpt from the website Lehmier shared with Patch, chronicling how she and her family coped with the diagnosis and early treatment.  Lehmier will soon mark her second year being cancer-free: Her last chemotherapy treatment was Nov. 8, 2010.    February 14, 2010: I found a lump on my left breast. You Sent It In: Rep. Murphy Honors Moon Vet in Ceremony

A reader submits photos and a recap of a Bethel Park ceremony recognizing Moon-area veterans.

"On the morning of Sept. 15,  I had the very distinct honor of attending a breakfast and ceremony recognizing Southwestern Pennsylvania Veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  The ceremony was held at the Bethel Park Community Center. The community center was packed with veterans and their families as Congressman Tim Murphy lead in the Pledge of Allegiance. Ms. Sonia Stopperich, a North Strabane Township Supervisor, followed with an exceptional rendition of the National Anthem. Sean Parnell, author of the book Outlaw Platoon gave a very stirring talk about bravery in the face of danger veterans have displayed during wartime.  Many, some now feeble and stooped with age, humbly and appreciatively accepted their long over-due …

Moon Boy Scouts Retire Flags

Local scouts retire American flags at an annual ceremony at Moon Park.

Local Boy Scouts held a ceremony at Moon Park to properly retire American flags.  Scouts and community leaders commemorated the event on Sept. 8 alongside Allegheny County Councilman Matt Drozd, who spoke at the ceremony. You Sent It In: MCA-TV Debuts PSA for Injured Police

Local leaders film a public service announcement in Moon.

Moon Community Access Television on Tuesday previewed a 30-second public service announcement for the Western Pennsylvania Police Benevolent Foundation.  The ad spot will soon air regularly on MCA-TV and be sent to public television stations throughout the region.  Jerry Keller, a member of the Crescent Township Board of Commissioners and member of the foundation, worked with the television studio to create the advertisment. Five area children also have roles in the commercial.  The announcement encourages public awareness of the foundation, which provides assistance to injured police and the families of police killed in the line of duty. In recent years, Western Pennsylvania has suffered the tragic loss of several of our fine officers as …

You Sent It In: Boys Lacrosse Volunteers at Verland Foundation

The team took part in a service project on May 20.

Members of the Moon Area High School boys lacrosse team spent their day volunteering at the Moon Township-based Verland Foundation.  The team, which ranked second in its division at the end of this year's season, performed the volunteer work on May 20.  Moon lacrosse, which is in its second year at the Moon Area School District, will be included as a WPIAL sport during the 2012-2013 school year.  The Verland Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides a range of services to people with intellectual and physical disability.  Thanks to Patch reader Veronica Constantine for submitting these photos.

You Sent It In: 911th Opens New Lodge

Crescent Commissioner Jerry Keller submitted photos from Sunday's ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 911th Airlift Wing.

Officials at the 911th Airlift Wing on Sunday hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to usher in the opening of a new lodge for the base's reservists.  Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and representatives from the Military Affairs Coalition of Western Pennsylvania were on hand for the opening of the building.  Col. Craig C. Peters also assumed command of the base on Sunday following a change-of-command ceremony.  The base is slated to close in 2013 as a part of an effort to drastically reduce federal defense spending. Each of the base's 1,100 military and 280 civilian personnel positions will be eliminated in the closure.  Crescent Township Commissioner Jerry Keller was on hand for the ribbon cutting and change-of-command ceremony. Lady Tigers to Host Soccer Camp

Young athletes can register now for the summer event.

Moon Area High School's Lady Tigers soccer team will host a youth soccer camp fundraiser June 25 through June 28.  Youngsters ages 6 through 12 can participate in the summer camp and can attend morning or evening sessions.  The camp takes place at Moon Area High School. Crescent Commissioner Stumps with Romney in South Park

Crescent Commissioner Jerry Keller was on hand for presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Monday morning campaign stop in South Park.  Romney spoke to supporters during his visit to CONSOL's Research and Development Campus.  Keller said security at the event remained tight during Romney's 30-minute speach.  "Dressed comfortably in a dark sport jacket, blue jeans and absent a tie, Romney appeared very relaxed as he spoke without the use of notes of teleprompters," Keller said.  Click through to view Keller's photos from the event.

You Sent It In: Moon Boys Basketball Hosts Weekend Tournament

Teams from around the region will compete.

Moon Area boys basketball will host an invitational tournament this weekend at the Moon Area High School gymnasium.  The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Teams in grades 7, 8 and 9 will participate.  Teams from West Allegheny, Peters, Aliquippa, Hopewell, Midland and Cannon McMilan will compete.
