Whiz Kids

Whiz Kids: Student Receives Full College Scholarship and 'Green Prom Challenge' Winners

A look at the accomplishments of area students.

Senior receives Seton Hill scholarship Mara Willette, a senior at Moon Area High School, received a full scholarship to Seton Hill University.  Willette maintains a 3.7 QPA, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Art and Literature Club, drama club stage crew and bowling team.  Moon seniors win 'green prom' challenge Moon Area High School students Allison Murphy, Emily D'Amico, Jessica Peng, Dana Murray, Rebbeca Zane, Delany Padgett, Abby Eberts, Kati Daczowski won first prize in the "Dream Green Prom" challenge, hosted by the Fairchild Chellange at the Phipp.  Click here to view the students' video.  Moon students head to National Academic Games Tournament Moon Area High School students have qualified to compete in the 2013 …

Whiz Kids: Montour Cheerleaders Place in Competition

A look at the accomplishments of area students.

Montour varsity cheerleaders place in WPIAL competition The Montour High School varsity cheerleaders earned fifth place in the AAA/AAAA division of the WPIAL's first cheerleading competition. The team will compete Feb. 2 in Hershey during the state's first PIAA cheerleading competition.   Moon student earns Eagle Scout rank Michael Kotok, a junior at Moon Area Middle School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest honor in Boy Scouting. Whiz Kids: Senior Signs Letter of Intent, Poetry Winner & 'Girls on the Run'

A look at the accomplishments of area students.

Allard Elementary students Katherine Gribben, Kira Ley, Julia Benson, Rhianna Firmstone, Maya Baker, Mia Manna, Isabelle McCoy, Melina Krawchick, Ava Kachmar and Madison Fehr, members of the school's "Girls on the Run" program, participated earlier this month in the Jingle Bell Run 5K on Pittsburgh's North Shore. The students trained for three months to take part in the fundraiser.  Montour High School senior Sam Mersing signed his NCAA Division I baseball National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Pittsburgh on a baseball scholarship.  Jake Dickey, a senior at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School, placed in the top five in poetry interpretation portion at the North Catholic High School Forensics Tournament in December. Whiz Kids: Moon Students to Sing National Anthem at WPIAL Championship

A look at the accomplishments of area students.

A team of Moon Area High School seniors placed third in a statewide business competition for students.  Eight Moon Area High School students competed Nov. 2 in the Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference. One team of Moon students placed third out of 25 teams in the competition.  The winning team included students Shannon Flannery, Joshua Knupp, Lindsay Ottaviani and Doug Ruffing.  --- Moon Area students Jordan Taylor, a junior, and Sydney Taylor, a sophomore, will sing the National Anthem at the Nov. 23 AAAA WPIAL football championships, held at Heinz Field.  The students will sing the anthem at 2 p.m. on the field's 50-yard line. Moon Student Meets Golf Legend Arnold Palmer

The student raised money for the golfer's prostate cancer charity.

A Moon Area High School senior had the chance to meet golf great Arnold Palmer.  Derek Truninger, who is captain of the golf team, presented Palmer with an $850 check for his charity, the Arnie Army Foundation, which supports prostate cancer research.  Tuninger raised the money by selling golf-themed clothing adorned with a 'What Would Arnie Do' slogan, according to the Moon Area School District.  Derek will attend Cedarville University on a golf scholarship and plans to major in graphic design.

Whiz Kids: Film Fest Winners and Seniors Earn Scholarships

A look at the accomplishments of local students

A group of Moon Area High School students won first place earlier this month at the Antelope Film Festival at Avonworth High School. Students Jake Paule, Chad Limbruner and Steven Brown’s A Day in the Life: The Apple User, placed first in the documentary category. Moon Area High School seniors received scholarships from local organizations during the district’s May 3 honors night. Scholarship winners include: Marine Corps Awards: Education Awards: Eighth grade students Abby Keppel, Betsy Naugle, Emily Padgett, and Alayna Trice placed first at the 2012 Fluid Power Challenge sponsored by Wojanis Power Supply.  Students were asked to design and construct a device controlled by pneumatic or hydraulic power that would move a wooden block from …

Moon, OLSH Nominated for Gene Kelly Awards

The award winners will be announced at a 7:30 p.m. program on Saturday, May 26, at the Benedum Center.

Moon Area High School's rendition of Guys and Dolls notched a nomination for best student orchestra in this year's 2012 Pittsburgh CLO Gene Kelly Awards.  Moon student Zach Houston has also been nominated as best supporting actor for his role as Nicely, Nicely in the musical.  Our Lady of the Sacred Heart's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, meanwhile, was nominated for best musical in the budget category I division.  It also picked up nods for best scenic design, best costume design and best lighting.  OLSH student Vinnie Smith was nominated for best supporting actor for his turn as Bud Frump in the production. Whiz Kids: Dance Team Takes Home Honor and Tiger Spirit Awards

A look at accomplishments of area students.

The Moon Area High School dance team placed as grand champion in high school dance at the University of Pittsburgh's Cheerleading and Dance competition in December.  The team took home first place in junior varsity hip hop. Members of the team received individual medals and the group brought home a state championship banner.  Moon high school students Tim Whetstone and Jocelyn Ellis garnered the Moon Area School District's Tiger Spirit Award at the district's April 9 school board meeting.  The award focuses on positive character traits, including excellent classroom behavior. Jocelyn was selected for her compassion toward others while Tim was chosen for his positive attitude, according to a statement from the school district.  Winners of …

Moon Students Come Out on Top at Civics Fair

Moon students earn honors in regional event.

Two Moon Area High School students won top honors after competing in the Civics Fair 2011, a collaboration between Greater Pittsburgh Student Voices and the Youth Media Advocacy Project.  Ashley Hall placed first for her entry focused on women's suffrage history. Allison Murphy placed third for an entry detailing the importance of student involvement in politics.  Other students who participated in the event included Mai Casteveter, Anurag Purker and Dakota Talbott.
