Following a 44-month grand jury investigation revealing untold millions of public dollars being squandered through “pay-to-play” corruption, political patronage and a lack of competitive bidding, legislation has been introduced in the state House to abolish the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. House Bill 1197 would transfer all operations, maintenance, construction and other responsibilities for the turnpike to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in an effort to streamline government and enhance efficiency. If enacted, this legislation would require PennDOT to honor any collective bargaining agreement in existence between the Turnpike Commission and any employee organization. Several key transportation improvements will occur in 2013 on state-owned roads in Robinson and Moon townships.
Here’s a preview from PennDOT of the major road improvements scheduled for 2013 that will affect Robinson-Moon motorists: In addition to the work listed above, District 11 will be making many improvements to the transportation system in Allegheny County through various county maintenance activities. District 11 will also be performing numerous bridge preservation and washing projects around the county in a continuing effort to address critical bridge needs. PennDOT District 11 will invest an estimated $210 million on 66 projects to improve, preserve or rehabilitate transportation infrastructure including 24 bridges (18 structurally deficient) in Allegheny County in 2013. The ramp from Old Steubenville Pike to eastbound Route 22 at the McDonald Interchange in North Fayette Township will close long-term beginning on Monday, April 22. In addition, PennDOT has announced a long-term closure of the right lane on eastbound Route 22 will occur. Crews will be extending the acceleration lane from the on-ramp onto eastbound Route 22. The ramp and lane closure will begin at about 7 a.m. on Monday and continue around-the clock through late August. The bridge over the Montour Trail, which is between Route 980 and Old Steubenville Pike, has been closed since late February. Winners have the opportunity to compete in the statewide competition in May in Camp Hill with more than $9,000 in scholarships at stake.
Students from Moon Area and Cornell are set to compete today against other districts for more than $2,000 in prizes and the chance to showcase their driver safety knowledge and skills. PennDOT, in cooperation with The Allstate Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the Allegheny County Safe Driving Committee, will host the "2013 Allegheny County Teen Safe Driving Competition" from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, April 9, at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute in Oakdale. Other participating school districts include Bethel Park, Chartiers Valley, Keystone Oaks, Northgate, North Allegheny, Riverview, Shaler and Sto-Rox. PennDOT plans daytime work on Thursday and Friday along Route 65 from Sewickley to the Beaver County line. Jim Struzzi, PennDOT spokesman, said because this work is temperature sensitive, it cannot be performed at night. The work is part of a $5.1 million project to improve Route 65, or Ohio River Boulevard, between Chestnut Street and Beaver County. The work will occur on Thursday, April 4 and Friday, April 5. Crews will be performing signal work to install pavement loop sensors in various locations. Short-term single lane closures will occur as needed between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days. The research and drilling work will occur this week.
If you're planning to travel Route 65 on Wednesday or Thursday, be aware that PennDOT will be conducting geotechnical drilling and research. James Struzzi, PennDOT spokesman, said the work will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4 weather permitting. Crews will be performing pavement core drilling operations between Interstate 79 in Glenfield and Chestnut Street in Sewickley as part of research for future improvements on Route 65 (Ohio River Boulevard). Lane closures will occur in various locations as needed both days. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect changing traffic patterns.
