Snapshots: Mooncrest Historic Photos Recognized

The Moon Township Historic Architectural Review Board announces the winners of its photo-submission contest.

They're snapshots depicting Mooncrest's past—a black and white photograph of of children on Oak Drive, friends posing for a group picture in 1943.  The Moon Township Historic Architectural Review Board has selected winners for its historic photograph contest. The effort was apart of an ongoing project to preserve the Mooncrest neighborhood's history.  The 42-acre neighborhood, constructed in 1943 by the U.S. Department of Defense, was home to Neville Island shipyard workers and their families before its housing stock was sold to private landlords in the 1950s. Now, Moon Township's Historic Architectural Review Board is launching an effort to earn Mooncrest a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.  The neighborhood was named a …

Effort Underway to Add Mooncrest Neighborhood to National Historic Register

The historic Moon Township district, which has fallen into disrepair in recent decades, could be honored for its World War II heritage.

It served as Moon Township's first planned neighborhood development—a cluster of adjoined redbrick houses situated on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River.  Recent years have seen the Mooncrest neighborhood on decline—many of its historic homes, built for Defense Department workers after the onset of World War II, have fallen into disrepair. Now, Moon Township officials are hoping to have Mooncrest added to the National Register of Historic Places, a title that could aid restoration efforts in the neighborhood.  The neighborhood was named a historic district in 2004 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Mooncrest Community Center Hosts Dinner Fundraiser

The center regularly holds the fundraisers to raise money for arts education, field trips.

Sister Rene Procopio said the scene is enough to warm her heart. Procopio, director of the Mooncrest Community Center, gathered alongside parishioners from Moon's St. Margaret Mary parish and residents of the Mooncrest neighborhood Monday night for the center's regular dinner fundraiser at Hoss's Steak and Seahouse.  "It's just overwhelming to see all these people here," said Procopio of the event. "And St. Margaret Mary has just been great."  Every other month the center hosts the dinner at the Beaver Grade Road eatery, raising between $400 and $600 for the center's arts programs per dinner. For the community center, which funds its programming through grants and philanthropy, every dollar counts, Procopio said.  Hoss's donates a portion …
