After years of back-and-forth between township and state officials, a local developer is nearing completion of a local landslide remediation.
Officials said remediation work is now wrapping up on a hillside that once posed a landslide threat to Flaughtery and Becks Run roads. Township Planning Director Adam McGurk said crews contracted by the Moon Township-based NewPointe Realty are in the final phases of the Autumn Woods remediation project. The work, which was originally slated to end in June, involved clearing and shoring up a hillside that township officials said was sliding toward Flaugherty Run Road Road due to water overflow from a stormwater basin. Since its construction in 2007, the improperly installed stormwater basin at the foot of the 34-home Autumn Woods development pushed sediment downward toward Flaughterty Run, uprooting trees, eroding land and threatening to…

After months of discussion over the McCutcheon Way landslide repair, new problems emerge.
Crescent officials said a landslide on McCutcheon Way has begun to interfere with utility poles. Members of the Crescent Township Board of Commissioners last night said Duquesne Light has moved wiring so residents do not lose power as a result of poles being pushed in the slide, but commissioners believe further action may be needed. The slide, which discovered in May, forced the township to shutter the roadway, which leads to Shouse Park. The road remains closed to motorists. Board president Bill Cook made a motion to allot more money to allow a geo-engineering firm to reassess the landslide. The motion was approved in a 5-0 vote. No specific amount of money was allotted for the work. At last night's first monthly business meeting of 2012…

Crews have worked since October to secure the slide near Flaugherty Run Road.
Township officials said crews are wrapping up the first phase of work to repair a landslide moving from the Autumn Woods housing development toward Flaugherty Run Road. Township Manager Jeanne Crease said last week the first phase of the project includes securing the hillside from slipping farther toward the roadway. Hard soil will prevent crews from continuing work on the hillside in winter months. "You can tell from the site that [crews] have done significant work there," Creese said. "He's actually made good progress there." In October, the New Castle-based Forbes Excavating began work on the slide, which was detected in 2007. Moon-based developer New Pointe Realty, which owns the hillside property and contracted the excavating …

Crews have begun work to remedy a worsening landslide at the foot of the Autumn Woods housing plan. New Castle-based Forbes Excavating began work on the hillside late last month. Township and state officials have pressured property owner New Pointe Realty of Moon to repair the slide, which was detected in 2007. Crews are removing trees and clearing the hillside to prepare for excavation. Work was originally slated to begin on the slide earlier this year. Water overflow from an improperly installed storm-water basin at the foot of the 34-house Autumn Woods development has pushed sediment downhill toward Becks Run and Flaugherty Run roads, uprooting trees and eroding land, since the basin was installed. The Pennsylvania Department of …

The board of commissioners agrees to repair the McCutcheon Way landslide.
The Crescent Township Board of Commissioners last night said a landslide on McCutcheon Way outside the community's Shouse Park continues to pose a safety hazard. The board discussed ways to remedy the landslide, which has caused the road to be closed for nearly two months. A geo-engineering firm assessed the landslide, and the estimated cost to repair the road is $22,335. Commissioners said their main concern now is how that cost will affect the township's finances, especially if the proposed repairs don't solve the problem. In late May, community officials began to notice that the road surface was sinking, cracking and sliding downhill. Finance Commissioner Karen Patton assured the board that its funds would be able to cover the cost …

The township has closed Shouse Park and the roadway as a result of a sinking road surface.
Deteriorating conditions on McCutcheon Way in Crescent have forced township officials to close the roadway and Shouse Park. The surface of the township-owned road has begun to sink and slide downhill, posing potential safety risks to park-goers and motorists, said Crescent Township Engineer Kevin Brett. "It's a safety precaution," said Brett of closing the roadway, which directly leads to Shouse Park. Brett said heavy spring rainfall might have contributed to the slide. Members of the Crescent Board of Commissioners last night said residents and township staff began to notice at the township's May 21 flea market that the road was beginning to sink and crack. Board President Bill Cook said at the meeting that portions of the roadway have …

Moon engineer says accord aims at ending landslide threat to Flaugherty Run and Becks Run roads.
Moon Township Engineer Malcolm Petroccia called it the community's "No. 1 environmental threat:" sediment creeping downward from the Autumn Woods development that could cause a landslide onto Flaugherty Run and Becks Run roads. Petroccia said the township recently reached an agreement with Autumn Woods developer NewPointe Realty of Moon to remove the landslide threat. Petroccia said NewPointe Realty installed a storm-water basin at the top of the steep embankment overlooking Flaugherty Run Road in 2007 during construction of the 34-house Autumn Woods development off Becks Run Road. But the storm-water basin has pushed sediment on the embankment downward toward Flaugherty Run and Becks Run roads, uprooting trees, eroding land and raising …
