Nearby: Bloomberg Names Cranberry One of Best Places to Raise a Family

The township to our north tops the list for Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday, Bloomberg Businessweek and Bloomberg Rankings named the best places in each state to raise a family. Topping the list for 2013 in Pennsylvania was, you guessed it, Cranberry Township. Cranberry manager Jerry Andree said township officials were excited by the designation. “It’s a major validation of our public policies that we’ve been implementing for a number of years,” he said. “We want this to be the best place to live.” When ranking the communities, Bloomberg took into account public school performance, safety, housing costs, commute time, poverty, adults’ educational attainment, share of households with children, and diversity. To gauge the local job market, Bloomberg also weighed median income and unemployment rates. …

Nearby: Allegheny County Bomb Squad Detonates WWII-Era Hand Grenade

A man chopping wood discovers a live “pineapple” hand grenade near the Evans City Cemetery.

The Allegheny County Police Bomb Squad was called to Jackson Township Sunday to detonate a Mk 2 hand grenade that a man found while chopping wood in the area. Jackson Police Chief Terry Seilhamer said the 52-year-old, who he declined to name, was cutting firewood near the Verizon Wireless cell phone tower behind the Evans City Cemetery on Franklin Road at about 7 p.m. when he came across the Mk 2, which is commonly known as a “pineapple” hand grenade. Seilhamer said the grenade was identifiable as the World War II-era weapon by its rough texture, including raised squares on the body, and its oval shape.   “It was quite weathered,” he said. Unsolved Cases: Steven Russo

The Seneca Valley teacher was found shot to death in his home along Perry Highway in Lancaster Township on Nov. 24, 2010.

Steven Russo, 48, was a popular statistics and calculus teacher at Seneca Valley High School in Jackson Township, Butler County. Students liked his style, including that he used March Madness brackets to teach the statistical probability of winning. His students had even created a page called "I Love Mr. Russo and His Russo-isms" on Facebook. That Facebook page turned into a place where students poured out their sympathies and memories after Russo was found shot to death in his home along Perry Highway (Route 19) in Lancaster Township on Nov. 24, 2010. A neighbor told the Post-Gazette that Russo had returned from school for lunch the day before and discovered an intruder in the home. The person just ran out of the house, the neighbor said…

Cranberry’s Miss PA Teen USA Takes Over Sheena Monnin Appearances

Julia Belechak will take over duties for Monnin, who resigned as Miss Pennsylvania USA amid scandal in June.

Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA will be pulling double duty for the rest of the year. moon Cranberry resident Julia Belechak will take over the appearance duties of Sheena Monnin, who resigned as Miss Pennsylvania in June. Monnin, also of Cranberry, made headlines last month when she accused the Miss USA pageant of being rigged. In statements on her Facebook page, Monnin said a fellow contestant in the competition saw a list of the top five women in the pageant before judging began on the show. The 27-year-old also called the organization fraudulent, lacking in morals and trashy. The move earned her the ire of outspoken mogul—and Miss Universe co-owner—Donald Trump, who publicly threatened to sue Monnin. The Miss Universe Organization—which …

What’s That Springtime Smell?

Patch has cracked the case of the stinky spring air.

With this month's —heck, this month’s — unusually warm weather, Moon-area residents have noticed a distinct smell in the air. And no, we’re not talking about the fresh scent of spring. Readers have detected a fishy smell similar to standing water or an ocean marsh. On the Cranberry Patch Facebook page, Tamra Thorne commented that she could smell it near the 7-Eleven convenience store on Route 19. Reader Shelle Jamieson caught a whiff of it in the parking lot at Lowe’s and Target on Route 228, while Cranberry Patch editor Jessica Sinichak sniffed it out on Old Mars Crider Road in Seven Fields. The smell isn’t limited to the Cranberry area, either. Our Patch colleagues from around the Pittsburgh region have reported pockets of stench from …
