Are you distracted by your cell phone or life in general? Guess who needs your FULL attention: Kids getting on and off buses or waiting at a bus stop.
As the new school year begins, PennDOT reminds drivers in Moon and Robinson to remain vigilant as students and school buses return to the roadways. That means: Put the cell phone away, set your cup of coffee down, don't look in your rear-view mirror to fix your hair. Concentrate on who and what is around you. Countless accidents happen in the Pine-Richland community because drivers admit that they simply were not paying attention. (Check out our Traffic Blotters.) “Our ultimate goal is to make sure everyone safely arrives at their destination,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “Motorists should avoid distractions and obey school bus and school zone traffic laws so we have the safest possible environment for students boarding and …

As the first day of class nears, the school district lacks a final occupancy permit for its $52 million renovated high school.
The recently renovated Montour High School is without a final occupancy permit three weeks before its first day of class for the upcoming school year. Robinson Township officials have not issued a final permit for the Clever Road building, which underwent a $52 million, two-year renovation and opened to students at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. The building has operated under a temporary permit for the past year. Robinson Township Manager Aaron Bibro said he could not comment on whether the lack of an occupancy permit would impact the first day of school, which is scheduled on Aug. 27. He also said he could not comment on whether school and township officials have had any correspondence regarding obtaining the final …

Tell us your lunch box memories in the comments section or explain what your kids are bringing to school on the first day.
I can still hear my sandwich, apple and thermos rattling around in that blue, plastic lunch box I brought to school each day in elementary school. The food would be making a deep clunking sound as I carried my Snoopy lunch box with my little backpack slung across my shoulders. Ka-clunck, ka-clunk, ka-clunck. My elementary school in Mt. Lebanon, just a couple blocks from the house, didn’t serve hot food, so we packed our lunches each day or walked up to the now defunct Chicago’s Pizzeria when we were old enough. The only thing I did buy each day was a half-pint of milk. But by the time we made it to junior high, we were too cool for lunch boxes and usually brown bagged it or ate that scrumptious cafeteria food (anyone remember those pizza …

Students in grades five through eight are slated to move into the building this fall. Take a look at some newly released photos of the new building.
Moon Area Superintendent Donna Milanovich said the newly renovated Moon Area Middle School will open on time. The district is slated to open the facility, which is undergoing an extensive, $45 million renovation, at the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year. The building will house students in grades five through eight. In an Aug. 1 letter to community members, Milanovich said no orientation date has been set for middle schoolers because construction on the facility will continue through August. Milanovich said in the letter that the project's completion was delayed after the Ross-based firm Reginella Construction defaulted on the project. She said the gymnasium, library and auditorium are still undergoing renovations, but classrooms…
