Autumn Woods Landslide Repair Near Completion

After years of back-and-forth between township and state officials, a local developer is nearing completion of a local landslide remediation.

Officials said remediation work is now wrapping up on a hillside that once posed a landslide threat to Flaughtery and Becks Run roads.  Township Planning Director Adam McGurk said crews contracted by the Moon Township-based NewPointe Realty are in the final phases of the Autumn Woods remediation project.  The work, which was originally slated to end in June, involved clearing and shoring up a hillside that township officials said was sliding toward Flaugherty Run Road Road due to water overflow from a stormwater basin.  Since its construction in 2007, the improperly installed stormwater basin at the foot of the 34-home Autumn Woods development pushed sediment downward toward Flaughterty Run, uprooting trees, eroding land and threatening to…

Crews Finish First Phase of Landslide Remediation

Crews have worked since October to secure the slide near Flaugherty Run Road.

Township officials said crews are wrapping up the first phase of work to repair a landslide moving from the Autumn Woods housing development toward Flaugherty Run Road.  Township Manager Jeanne Crease said last week the first phase of the project includes securing the hillside from slipping farther toward the roadway.  Hard soil will prevent crews from continuing work on the hillside in winter months.  "You can tell from the site that [crews] have done significant work there," Creese said. "He's actually made good progress there."   In October, the New Castle-based Forbes Excavating began work on the slide, which was detected in 2007. Moon-based developer New Pointe Realty, which owns the hillside property and contracted the excavating …

Work Under Way on Autumn Woods Landslide

Check out photos of the on-going project.

Crews have begun work to remedy a worsening landslide at the foot of the Autumn Woods housing plan. New Castle-based Forbes Excavating began work on the hillside late last month. Township and state officials have pressured property owner New Pointe Realty of Moon to repair the slide, which was detected in 2007. Crews are removing trees and clearing the hillside to prepare for excavation. Work was originally slated to begin on the slide earlier this year. Water overflow from an improperly installed storm-water basin at the foot of the 34-house Autumn Woods development has pushed sediment downhill toward Becks Run and Flaugherty Run roads, uprooting trees and eroding land, since the basin was installed. The Pennsylvania Department of …

Work on Autumn Woods Landslide Still Stalled

Repairs to a worsening landslide near Becks Run and Flaugherty Run roads have yet to begin.

A spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said the agency is giving a Moon developer "some leeway" to begin work on a landslide near Flaugherty Run Road.  Moon-based developer NewPointe Realty signed a consent order in July with the DEP, agreeing to begin work Aug. 1 to repair the landslide. Two weeks after that deadline, work has not yet begun on the sliding hillside.  DEP spokeswoman Lisa Kasianowitz said the department would likely not begin enforcing sanctions against the developer immediately because of the scale of the project.  Since 2007, an improperly installed storm-water basin at the foot of the 34-unit Autumn Woods development has pushed sediment downward toward Flaugherty Run Road, uprooting …
