In hundreds of communities, chunks of steel from the Twin Towers beget memories of a day to mourn and prayers for a future of peace. Today, Patch shares many of those stories with you.
To the son who followed a family legacy into firefighting, it evokes the father and former Long Island fire chief who fell that day. To the director of a Georgia park, it explains why he’s been called to war three times in the past decade. To the residents of Gig Harbor, WA, it required no less than an escort of firefighters, paramedics and as many as 100 motorcycles during its nine-day, cross-country passage from New York City to the crash site of United Flight 93 in rural Pennsylvania to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota to its new home in the Pacific Northwest. Shards of a symbol, hunks of steel. Bolt-studded, fire-scarred beams that until 9/11 supported the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York now lie scattered across American …

Memorial garden also will feature commemorative bricks to honor victims of terror attacks.
Moon Township will revamp a planned Memorial Garden to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and to display its acquisition of a 6-foot-tall pillar of steel recovered from the World Trade Center’s north tower. “As scrap, it's worth about $400,” Moon Fire Marshal and Navy veteran Charles Belgie said Wednesday of the 900-pound pillar, which will be mounted and displayed between the township’s Public Safety and Municipal buildings at 100 Beaver Grade Road. “But in this form, it’s priceless.” On Wednesday night, Belgie told the Moon Board of Supervisors that the new park also will feature flowers, benches and bricks that may be purchased and dedicated to a victim who died in the 9/11 terror attacks. The park also will…

With bin Laden's death, proposed memorial will bring out more people to pay homage to victims of Sept. 11 attacks, firefighter says.
When Moon Fire Marshal Charles Belgie began his campaign to obtain a piece of the World Trade Center for display in Moon Township, little did he know that chunk of metal could and would take on even more meaning. Belgie was the driving force behind obtaining a piece of metal from the World Trade Center from the Port Authority of New York. The piece, approximately 5 feet tall, will be mounted and displayed between the township’s Public Safety and Municipal buildings at 100 Beaver Grade Road. The display will be located next to the Moon’s veterans memorial. After today’s news that Osama bin Laden had been killed, Belgie feels the display will spur more people to pay homage to those who lost their lives in the terror attack of Sept. 11, 2001…

Pittsburgh natives also join thousands who gather in New York after learning of the death of Osama bin Laden.
Moon Patch Local Editor Jenna Staul was in Times Square overnight and witnessed New York City's reaction to Osama Bin Laden's death. She filed this report: I heard someone say it was like New Year's Eve. Late Sunday night, a crowd began to gather in the nighttime glow of Times Square. By 1 a.m., a growing swarm of people huddled below the ABC News Building -- some of them draped in American flags, some dancing. Over the sound of honking taxi cabs and a bagpipe troupe, nearly everyone chanted. Above their heads, a brightly lit headline scrolled on the electronic screen: "Breaking News: Osama Bin Laden Has Been Killed." You could say that it was a pretty good night to be in New York City. When I found myself just a few blocks from Times …
