Winter Weather Advisory: Freezing Rain & Snow Predicted for Robinson, Moon

A wintry mix of precipitation is expected to begin Sunday evening.

The National Weather Service in Moon Township has issued a winter weather advisory for the Pittsburgh region from 11 p.m. Sunday until 2 p.m. Monday. A period of snow and freezing rain is expected overnight Sunday, before changing to all rain by Monday afternoon. A winter weather advisory means that snow, sleet, or freezing rain will make travel difficult. Here's a more detailed look at the forecast:

Wacky Weather: Temps in the High 50s on Tuesday, Wednesday

In the wonderful, wacky world of weather, check this out—the National Weather Service in Moon Township forecasts temperatures will reach highs around 57 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. This comes on the heels of snow, sleet and freezing rain Monday morning. But don't think spring has sprung yet. The weather service predicts a chance of snow showers for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here's the forecast: Monday night: Showers likely, mainly before 10 p.m. Areas of fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 41. Southwest wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. Winter Weather Advisory: Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain in Forecast

National Weather Service issued advisory Tuesday.

Just when you thought all the snow had melted, along comes another winter weather advisory. The National Weather Service  in Moon Township said the advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) until 10 a.m. Wednesday for Allegheny, Butler, Beaver and surrounding areas. From one to two inches of snow is forecast with a light glaze of ice possible from freezing rain, according to the weather service website. Interesting! It was a year ago, nearly to the day, that we had a serious winter snowfall. It was the day that several of us took a bus to the Detroit Auto Show. We waited in a Walmart parking lot for several hours as the snow fell, while we sat in our cars periodically warming up our engines to defrost the windows. The National Weather Service in Moon Township has issued a winter weather advisory for a wide portion of Western Pennsylvania from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The storm is expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of snow by the end of the day Saturday. Here is the latest forecast from the weather service:

Local Inventor Hopes to 'Get on the Shelf' at Walmart

Wiper Sleeve the creation of a Moon resident who has entered the product in a competition that he hopes will lead to shelf space at the giant retailer.

Jack Rees said the idea was so simple he should have thought of it sooner.  One winter day Rees watched his wife slide plastic grocery bags over her car's windshield wipers to prevent ice from building up on them.  "And so I started to do the same thing, but plastic bags didn't fit on my [vehicle's] wipers," he said.  So instead, Rees, a 59-year-old retired postal worker from Moon, bought some fabric from a local store to craft his own wiper cover — and Wiper Sleeve was born.  "Think of it as a sleeve that you would slide up over your arm, but instead, you put it on your wiper," Rees said. "It's a very simple product." The Wiper Sleeve is now one of more than 4,000 products in the running in Walmart's Get on the Shelf competition. …

Winter Returns with Overnight Coating of Snow

Duquesne Light reported 4,500 power outages, but that number decreased to 127 by Saturday morning.

Western Pennsylvania residents awoke to a coating of snow Saturday morning as a mild winter transformed into a "real" winter to show us that it is still February, after all. Strong winds that moved into the area Friday disrupted power and toppled trees. As of 7:30 a.m., Duquesne Light reported 127 customers were without power, down from the initial 4,500 scattered outages in Allegheny and Beaver counties. Customers will see power restored by Saturday afternoon, according to Duquesne Light spokesman Joseph H. Vallarian. The National Weather Service forecasts scattered areas of snow showers will continue to move southeast across the region into the afternoon. Weekend Forecast Calls for Wind, Snow Squalls

The National Weather Service reports that 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible.

PennDOT is urging drivers to slow down, pay attention and use caution on area roadways, particularly on elevated areas such as bridges and ramps through this weekend. A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible in the region, according to the National Weather Service in Moon.  Snow squalls and drifting conditions should be expected across the region as strong winds and bitter temperatures are occurring. Motorists need to be alert for rapidly changing road and weather conditions. 'Great December' Helps Road Projects

Warm weather allows crews to complete more construction work done.

The unseasonably warm weather this month hasn’t just been a nice way to avoid chilly winter temperatures. It’s also giving construction crews a chance to catch up on roadwork before the heavy snow falls. PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said work has ended on major paving projects, but crews still are able to perform work on bridges, install guard rails guiderails and put up signs. “It’s been a great December for contractors and PennDOT to get projects done by the end of the year,” he said. “It’s more construction in December than in recent memory, and that’s good because we had a very wet spring, and this lets them wrap things up.” Even when temperatures are warmer than usual, rainy days still are not an ideal time for workers to be out on …
