State Offices Deny Fontana's Suggestion for Voter ID Centers

In August, State Sen. Wayne Fontana, who serves Robinson Township, asked Gov. Tom Corbett and Secretary of State Carol Aichele for permission to make state offices places where people can get proper voter identification. He was denied.

Last week the Pennsylvania Supreme Court heard arguments on why Act 18 (voter ID legislation) should be ruled unconstitutional or at least delayed in its implementation for the Nov. 6 General Election. Because November is approaching quickly and the voter ID mandate may be affirmed, I sent a letter to Governor Tom Corbett and Secretary of State Carol Aichele in mid-August asking them to authorize state offices as a place where individuals can go to get their photo identification, or at the very least, establish more centers in neighborhoods for this purpose. After all, while we wait for the court decision, our state should be doing everything in its power to make sure everyone has the ability to exercise their constitutional right to vote…

State Lawmakers Support Hand-Held Cellphone Ban in Cars

A PA House bill would mirror the state's new texting ban with regard to enforcement and penalties.

State Reps. William C. Kortz II and Martin Michael Schmotzer appeared at a news conference this past week at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in support of legislation that would ban Pennsylvania drivers from talking on hand-held cellphones while driving. Their bill would mirror the state's new texting ban with regard to enforcement and penalties. The use of a hand-held cell phone while driving would become a primary offense with a $50 fine, or a $100 fine if driving in a school zone, work zone or highway safety corridor. Exceptions to the ban would include drivers using GPS devices, when their vehicles are stopped due to traffic obstructions and when initiating phone calls.
