Patch Poll: How Much Is Your 2012 Holiday Budget?

Have you trimmed your spending because of the economy or has good fortune enabled you to spend more?

Many of you might already be done with your holiday shopping. Still others might be waiting for even better deals that sometimes pop up prior to Christmas. But how does your spending compare to prior holiday seasons? Those who have lost jobs due to the economy, who feel their jobs might be threatened or who have suffered other setbacks might be a little tighter with the purse strings than someone who just got that promotion. With Black Friday and Small Business Saturday over, and Cyber Monday waiting for a business surge tomorrow, you should have a pretty good handle on your 2012 holiday budget. So how much do you plan to spend this holiday season? Let us know by voting in our poll. And tell us in the comments section why you are spending …

Well, James, I'm big on doing those things around the holidays that bring you joy, satisfaction, or bring such to others. Which is why I support your choices as they bring joy to you and yours. If you love baking and giving cookies to everyone around you, that can be a great way for you to celebrate the holiday. If going to church services does it for you, then that's what you should do. Will You Shop Locally in Robinson and Moon on Small Business Saturday?

Shopping at locally owned stores helps boost the Robinson and Moon-area economy.

Small Business Saturday—a day to support small businesses in the community—falls on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving and one day after Black Friday.  American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season. Shopping on Small Business Saturday is the perfect way to give back to the businesses you know and love in the Robinson and Moon area.  Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy in their communities. Robinson-Moon Patch wants to get the word out on what local businesses are doing on Small Business Saturday by offering this space as a free forum to let the community know what …

Moon Plaza Giant Eagle to Offer Beer, Wine with Cafe Expansion

The Moon Plaza grocery store will soon expand its offerings, now that it's obtained a license permitting limited liquor sales.

Giant Eagle plans to expand its Moon Township location with a cafe that will include beer and wine on the menu.  The Moon Township Board of Supervisors on Monday night approved a restaurant liquor license for the University Boulevard store, said Moon communications director Alexis Sargeant.  In addition to the cafe, which will feature indoor and outdoor seating, the grocery chain will expand the store's prepared foods, deli and bakery sections.  Sargeant said the expansion will add 50 new jobs to the Moon Township location.  The cafe's menu will feature premium and craft beers alongside other food items.  "There will be a two-beer limit per person," Sargeant said of cafe. "It will be more like how the (Robinson Township) Market District is…

Thankful for Sausage!

Columnist Gab Bonesso is very thankful for local business: this holiday it's Ricci's Italian Sausage.

One of the stars of my family’s Thanksgiving feast had nothing to do with poultry. I suspect Italian sausage is not necessarily a staple of your holiday meals, but you might want to rethink that, particularly if you can make it out to Ricci’s Italian Sausage on Steubenville Pike. My grandparents began shopping at Ricci’s back in the late 1940s. Back then it was located on Island Avenue in McKees Rocks. Before that Ernest and Stella Ricci were making their sausage out of the basement of their McKees Rocks home. How old-school/awesome is that? My grandmother always said, “Ernie Ricci’s sausage is the best in the world and it’s made right here in the 'Rocks! We only buy Ricci’s!” My grandmother had a temper and a powerful right hook. You didn…
