Weather Alert: It’s Going to Get Nasty Out There

Don’t forget your hat and gloves today. Weather forecasters are predicting heavy snow.

Thus far, March is certainly doing its best to come in like a lion. The National Weather Service in Moon Township has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 7 p.m. Wednesday for the Pittsburgh region. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are predicted, according to the weather service. The flakes are expected to start late Tuesday afternoon as a mix of rain and snow moves into the area. The most intense snow could fall overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. The weather could cause hazardous travel conditions due to snow-covered streets. Motorists should prepare for limited visibility on the roads. Temperatures will reach a high of 40 degrees Tuesday before dropping to 29 later in the evening, according to the …

Potholes and Cracks and Bumps... Oh, My!

PennDOT is encouraging motorists to report potholes and roadway concerns to road workers.

It's freeze-thaw season, which means it's pothole time. PennDOT officials are encouraging motorists to report potholes or other road problems on state-owned roads. “We want our roadway system to be the best it can be, but with a network of 2,568 miles, we can’t be everywhere at once when sudden problems arise,” District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said. “Motorists can help us keep state roads in good shape by reporting any problems they encounter, especially if it involves a safety concern.”  With the frigid temperatures and consistent precipitation that has occurred throughout the region in recent weeks, potholes, cracking and other roadway deficiencies can occur more rapidly than usual on many area roadways. Callers are asked to be as …

PennDOT Braces for Winter

A new plow will help clear interstates and expressways in Allegheny County.

As winter approaches, PennDOT crews are gearing up for road maintenance, and in Allegheny County, they have a new three-lane plow to help with the job. On Monday, Angelo Pampena, senior highway maintenance manager for PennDOT, gave members of the media an overview of the Tow Plow, which he said will help clear roads more efficiently and could potentially cut costs. “For bigger arteries with a larger snowfall, that Tow Plow is much more efficient,” Pampena said. It acts much like a wing plow, swiveling out to the right of a standard plow truck to cover as many as three lanes. It is equipped with air brakes and two 1,000-gallon tanks for salt brine and can maneuver through traffic going as fast as 60 miles per hour.  Pampena said the plow, …

PennDOT Warns of Drifting Snow, Slush-Covered Roads

PennDOT reminds drivers to slow down on Pittsburgh-area roads today.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said last night's snow storm is still causing headaches for local motorists.  Drifting snow, strong winds and icy temperatures could make for treacherous road conditions, PennDOT said this morning. In addition, snow squalls today can limit roadway visibility. Drivers are urged to slow down, pay attention and use caution.  Drivers who encounter drifting snow can call 1-800-FIX-ROAD to report the location of the drift.  PennDOT also urges drivers to not pass plow and salt trucks.  Need more info about snow plowing in Moon?
