Stakeholders have announced the completion of the plan, which provides safe pedestrian and bicycle routes through McKees Rocks, Stowe, Coraopolis and Neville for residents and visitors.
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Friends of the Riverfront, the PA Environmental Council, Stowe and Neville townships, and McKees Rocks and Coraopolis boroughs have completed the Ohio River Trail Plan which provides safe pedestrian and bicycle routes through their communities for residents and visitors. The stakeholders made the announcement on Wednesday. To most Moon and Robinson township residents, the new, white Allegheny County trucks they might pass on the roadways won't appear to be anything extraordinary. But they are a first step in the county going green with a cleaner-burning fuel for fleet vehicles. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and other officials unveiled the county’s first two compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles at a press conference on Monday. Each vehicle cost $35,285. The Silverado 2500 HD, four-wheel drive, extended cab pickup trucks contain specially designed 6.0 litre Vortec V8 engines and have a gross vehicle weight of 9,500 pounds. Allegheny County Council passed a 2013 budget that includes a millage rate decrease. On Tuesday, county officials approved a a $799.4 million budget, reducing the millage rate to 4.73 mills, according to the Tribune Review. The millage was reduced from 2012's rate of 5.69 mills to offset the increase property values stemming from the county's reassessment. Under the reassessment, taxing bodies can't receive more than 5 percent in property tax revenue so as not to use the reassessment as a major tax increase. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald called a new six-figure grant awarded to the county's planned Montour Junction complex in Robinson, Coraopolis and Moon "great news for Allegheny County and the communities in the west corridor." Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced Monday that the county will discontinue the annual holiday-themed Celebration of Lights at Hartwood Acres Park due to high costs and declining sponsorships. The county-owned park spanning property in Hampton and Indiana townships has been the longtime site and the county Department of Parks and Recreation has overseen the annual three-mile driving tour of displays depicting Christmas, Hanukkah and winter themes. Government and business officials will tour development sites surrounding Pittsburgh International.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today will host United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk at Pittsburgh International Airport. Kirk along with United States Steelworkers president Leo Gerard will tour economic development sites surrounding the airport. Ambassador Kirk serves on President Obama's cabinet as a principal trade advisor and negotiatior. He will speak briefly at the airport following the tour. It is unclear if the tour will take the group to sites in Moon or Robinson. Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said she was unable to disclose the specific locations of the tour, though it will take place in the airport region. The new service kicks off in February.
Southwest Airlines will begin non-stop service in 2013 from Pittsburgh International to Palm Beach International, according to Allegheny County officials. Beginning in February, Southwest will offer daily, non-stop season service to the Florida airport. The inaugural flight for the service will mark the first time daily, non-stop flights have been offered between the airports since 2007. The flights can be booked at the airline's website.
