As Class Sizes Grow, Moon High School Lockers Could Come up Short

Class sizes at the high school are on the rise, Moon Area School District administrators say.

Crews will install an additional 117 lockers in the new Moon Area High School to accommodate increasing class sizes. The locker set, purchased through Tri-State Lockers at the state contract price of $18,150, will be installed during the summer season, along a second-floor wall spanning between the gymnasium and the auditorium. High school Principal Barry Balaski said the school’s current inventory of 1,200 lockers would fall 20 short when next year’s freshmen class enters the high school, necessitating the addition. This year, 1,072 students are enrolled in the high school—a figure that increased by 44 from the previous year. Balaski said the district projects those enrollment numbers will continue to climb in coming years. The purchase …

School Board Tours Middle School, Preps for Move

Teachers and staff will begin to move classroom materials into the building in May.

Staff members will move into the renovated Moon Area Middle School soon after May 1, despite a delay in the building's completion. Dennis Harbaugh, Moon Area School Board member and chairman of the facilities committee, said the school board on Monday toured the new building, which will open to students at the beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year. "It's moving along," he said. "Some of the classrooms are already painted. Other parts of the building are still behind." The building was slated to open May 1, but the board on Jan. 23 approved a series of change orders at no cost to the district that pushed the completion date to June 1. Still teachers and staff members will be able to move classroom materials and furniture into the …

Students will remain housed in the current middle school for the remainder of the year and the move isn't expected to impact classroom time. As stated in the article: The renovated building opens to students for the 2012-2013 school year. The concern was that if teachers weren't present to transport some of their own materials, it would incur extra moving costs for the district.   more ›

Moon Area School Board to Consult Solicitor's Firm on Change Orders

The board will not seek advice from a private resident on a pro-bono basis, said board president Sandra McCurdy.

Moon Area School Board president Sandra McCurdy said an architectual lawyer from the district's solicitor firm Maiello Brungo & Maiello will assist board members in reviewing interim change orders on school construction projects.  The board announced in recent weeks that a Moon resident had volunteered to consult with individual board members on a pro-bono basis regarding construction change orders, drawing criticism from some members of the public, including former board president Mark Scappe.  McCurdy said board members and John Wilhelm, of the Moon-based CJL Engineering, reached a mutual agreement to not move forward with that consulting. Instead, she said, board members can now confer with the district's solicitor's firm on interim …

Jodie you need to stop living under a rock. Just watch TV and listen to the radio about swear words. Also, this move of the 5th graders came from the administration and the redistricting committee. I was on that committee. Everything that went on in the district was not all Mr. Scappe's doings. The renovation is scheduled to open with the additions for the 5th graders. So you are saying that this…   more ›

Moon Principal Discusses Upcoming Middle School Changes

The district's soon-to-be-opened middle school brings schedule and curriculum changes for students.

Principal Melissa Heasley said that while curriculum for fifth-graders entering the Moon Area Middle School next year will be more rigorous, students will be up to the task. Heasley spoke last night about upcoming changes to the district’s middle school before an auditorium filled with parents and teachers. Next fall, the district will open the doors of its renovated middle school, which formerly served as its high school. Earlier this year, the district opened an 186,011-square-foot, $76 million new high school, shuttering the former building for the renovation. The current middle school is scheduled to be demolished next fall.  The reopened building will come with a number of changes for middle school students. Fifth-graders, who now …

Michelle and OMG, please allow me to clarify. At the meeting Mrs.Heasley showed the floor plan for the new middle school. It showed that the 5th and 6th graders will be on the first floor for ALL classes, including electives. The floor plan showed the 7th and 8th graders on the second floor for ALL classes, including electives. What Mrs.Heasley said was that the students would mix with other …   more ›
