School officials would like to hear more details before granting approval.
Approval of a trip by a student group often is routine business for school officials. But one such item on which Montour School Board is scheduled to vote has drawn a few questions and calls for clarification. As the board was wrapping up its agenda planning Thursday night, an upcoming trip by the high school marching band prompted a round of discussion, primarily because the destination is the Bahamas. Board member Duane Faith requested clarification of the proposed action, which is stated on the meeting’s printed agenda: “Approve the Montour High School Marching Band 2013 Spring Trip.” “I want to be very clear on what I am asked to approve,” Faith said. A look at accomplishments that area students have earned.
Students place in German Day competition Moon Area High School students placed second in the theater category during a German Day competition that the American Association of Teachers of German sponsored. Students created an original play that they performed in the competition. Moon students Tim Dombi, Matt Elchik, Sarah Henderson, Corey McAuliffe, Caroline Owens and Taylor Rice garnered the honor in March. Moon Area High School student to perform in PMEA Western Regional festival Moon area senior Danielle Muise was selected to perform in the PMEA Western Region Orchestra Festival. Moon students have been selected to perform in a host of regional events.
Moon Area High School band students last week performed in the Western Allegheny County Area Honors Band at Chartiers Valley High School. More than 160 local band students from area high schools participated in the annual event. The school district reports that 28 students took part in the event, which requires a rigorous two-day rehearsal. In addition, Moon junior Mark Bartus was selected as the first chair pianist in the PMEA honors jazz band earlier this month at Baldwin High School. Four students were selected to take part in Senior High District Band at North Allegheny High School, including senior trumpet Chris Nan, sophomore bassoon Adam Sniezek, sophomore French horn Nicholas Giralico and sophomore trombone Eric Homol. The students will perform next month at Carnegie Music Hall.
Three Moon Area students have been selected as members of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association honors band. Band directors from surrounding school districts evaluated and scored students on individual performances earlier this month. The selected students will take part in a regional concert Nov. 27 at Carnegie Music Hall. Sophomore bassoon player Adam Sniezek earned fourth chair. Senior trumpet player Christopher Nan earned eigth chair, and sophomore trombone player Erick Homol earned twelfth chair. The students prepared college-level solos on their respective instruments. Eight Moon Area students auditioned for spots in the ensemble.
