Man Accused of Stealing Donation Jars

The Sewickley man allegedly took donation jars meant for cancer patients and area volunteer fire departments. The alleged thefts took place on Neville Island, Scott Township and Peters.

A Sewickley man arrested this week is accused of stealing charitable donation jars from several businesses across the Pittsburgh area, including Scott Township. The jars contained loose change to help cancer patients and area volunteer fire departments. Ohio Township police Chief Norbert Micklos said they arrested Michael Coyle, 33, of Sewickley, after he allegedly took the donation jar at a 7-Eleven on Neville Island on Jan. 20. Ohio Township police, who cover Neville Island, charged him with theft and receiving stolen property. But Micklos said Coyle also confessed to similar thefts in Scott Township and Peters. Scott Township police said a donation box was stolen from the counter at the Panera Bread along Greentree Road. The theft …

Unsolved Cases: 'Baby Bede'

A baby boy found dead on Neville Island in 1999 has never been identified.

Most babies are brought into the world wanted, cared for and loved. But there are some babies who aren't that lucky. On April 11, 1999, some buzzards circling near the river's edge caught the attention of two employees doing a security check on the 3-11 p.m. shift at Pittsburgh Gear Co., a manufacturing company  on Neville Island. As they walked down a rutted path toward the banks of the Ohio River, they saw what drew the buzzards' attention—the lifeless body of a baby boy caught in the rocks and twigs in very shallow water off to the side of an old boat ramp. Part of his umbilical cord was still attached. According to an April 12, 1999 story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the men called police. Law enforcement officials said at the time …

UPDATE: RMU Begins Repairs to Collapsed Golf Dome

Crews are working to repair the Neville Island facility, which collapsed after strong winds last month.

Work to repair Robert Morris University's collapsed Neville Island golf dome began Monday.  A university spokesman said the facility is expected to re-open to golfers in two weeks. Crews will install a new panel replacing the damaged portion of the dome. The dome will be reinflated Wednesday.  The vinyl 100-foot by 80-foot facilty collapsed June 1 after heavy winds tore a hole in a section of the dome's panel. Employees and golfers escaped without injury, and the university's golf and miniature golf facilities have remained closed since.   The dome's reinflation is expected take three to four hours. The golf dome is located outside of RMU's Island Sports Center. Employees and golfers escaped without injury during its collapse and the …

Effort Underway to Add Mooncrest Neighborhood to National Historic Register

The historic Moon Township district, which has fallen into disrepair in recent decades, could be honored for its World War II heritage.

It served as Moon Township's first planned neighborhood development—a cluster of adjoined redbrick houses situated on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River.  Recent years have seen the Mooncrest neighborhood on decline—many of its historic homes, built for Defense Department workers after the onset of World War II, have fallen into disrepair. Now, Moon Township officials are hoping to have Mooncrest added to the National Register of Historic Places, a title that could aid restoration efforts in the neighborhood.  The neighborhood was named a historic district in 2004 by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. "There are perks to it," said Moon code officer Lora Dombrowski, discussing the neighborhood being added to the National …

What a wonderful surprise and a very special and needed program! So many of the children who graduated from Moon HS lived in the Mooncrest neighborhood for many years. After I graduated, the owner of the store built some apartments in the back of the store and I was the first occupant of the store! I can't tell you how many people are excited about hearing about this program and want to know how …   more ›

No Re-Opening Date Set for RMU Golf Dome

An RMU spokesperson said the university is "evaluating its options."

Robert Morris University has hired the Ontario-based firm World Air Structure Assistance to determine what to do with its Neville Island golf dome that deflated last week after heavy winds.  The white polyvinyl dome, which stood 100-feet long and 80-feet high, deflated after a wind microburst on the island tore a hole in the structure's roof, causing it collapse. Ten people, including staffers and golfers, were able to walk out of the dome before it toppled.  RMU spokesman Jonathan Potts said World Air Structure has evaluated the deflated dome and presented the university with options to repair and rebuild it.  No re-opening date has been announced for the sports dome, which is located next to the university's Island Sports Center arena…

RMU Golf Dome Collapses After Storm

A spokeswoman for the Moon-based university said no injuries have been reported.

No one was injured when Robert Morris University’s Golf and Sports Dome collapsed Friday afternoon. RMU Police Chief Randy Mink said a wind microburst that moved through the area shortly after 4 p.m. tore a hole in the dome's roof, causing it to deflate slowly.  “Everyone is safe,” spokeswoman Kyle Fisher said. Mink said a dozen employees of the university's Island Sports Center were inside the dome at the time of the storm, but were able to escape safely.  He said the dome, which stood 100-long and 80-feet high, has never collapsed prior to this instance but that a similar structure in Texas recently fell after a storm. The Neville Island facility, located on the grounds of the university's Island Sports Center, was used for indoor golf …
