Montour's 'Legally Blonde' Opens Thursday

Tickets are available now for the Montour High School spring musical.

  Montour High School's spring musical production Legally Blonde will open Thursday, featuring student Bailey Marasti in the lead role as Elle Woods.  The production, based on the movie of the same name, earned seven Tony Award nominations in its first year as a Broadway production.  The family friendly show is appropriate for children ages 12 and older. The show will run at 7:30 p.m. April 11 to April 13 and from April 18 to April 20. Matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. on April 14 and April 20. All performances will take place at Montour High School's auditorium.  Tickets information is available on the Montour Musical website and through the ticket hotline at 412.225.2815.

Moon, Montour Among Top County Schools for PSSA Scores

The Pittsburgh Business Times includes the neighboring school districts on its ranking of top area schools.

Both the Montour and Moon Area school districts have ranked among the top schools in Allegheny County based on PSSA scores.  Moon landed at number 16 on the list; Montour was ranked 26.  The Pittsburgh Business Times develops the ranking based on three years of PSSA test scores in math, reading and science. 10-Year-Old Montour Piano Prodigy Performs

Montour elementary student Katie Liu took the piano in March for a performance before the Montour School Board.

Burkett Elementary fourth-grader Katie Liu won first prize in the Duquesne Young Artist National Competition for musicians aged 10 to 12.  Katie, a gifted education student who began playing piano at age 4, performed before members of Montour's administration and school board during the board's March 8 meeting.  The Montour student studies with pianist Natasha Snitkovsky at the City Music Center.  View more videos on the Montour School District's YouTube channel.

PA Primary 2013: Candidates for Montour School Board

The Pennsylvania primary will be held on May 21.

The following candidates have filed for election for the Montour School Board. Three seats are open on the board in 2013.  Each candidate has cross-filed as both a Democrat and Republican, and will appear on both sides of the ballot. Ribbon-Cutting Set for New Montour Athletic Center

The Montour School District will host the official opening of the new Montour Athletic Center on May 4 and 5.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Footballers basketball team will take part in dedication events for the new Montour Athletic Center.  Montour school board members voted to designate May 4 and 5 as the dates for a weekend-long opening ceremony for the $17.14 million facility, which features a 360-degree indoor-arena that seats 1,500, as well as fitness rooms and sports offices. The Pittsburgh Steelers basketball team, a charity organization comprised of members of the Steelers' roster, will play members of the senior class and basketball team during an evening game on May 4.  Superintendent Donald Boyer said the district is now negotiating an appearance fee for the team. In New Montour Athletic Center, Chris Herren Shares Story of Struggle

The once drug-addicted former professional basketball player speaks before a packed Montour Athletic Center.

Former NBA star Chris Herren said he used to be "one of those kids who talked and messed around" during school assemblies.  Herren, whose drug addiction led to his firing from the Boston Celtics' roster a decade ago, spoke to students in grades 6 to 12 at the Montour School District about his descent into substance abuse.  At the assembly, he urged students to avoid use of controlled substances. Herren told students he overdosed four times and at the height of his addiction had a "$25,000 a day" pill habit. He has been convicted of seven felonies.  Herren also formerly played for the Denver Nuggets and in a European professional league.  "I spent every dollar I ever earned playing basketball on drugs," Herren said. Former NBA Star to Speak on Substance Abuse at Montour

Montour students and Robinson-era residents are invited to the motivational presentation, which will be hosted at the new Montour Athletic Center.

Former NBA player Chris Herren will address Montour students and community members in a motivational speech on the dangers of substance abuse.  Herren, who formerly appeared on the roster for the Denver Nuggets and Boston Celtics, will discuss his history of drug addiction and the impact it had on his career, according to an announcement from district administrators.  Herren, a convicted felon on drug charges, was released from the Celtics in 2004 after being arrested for heroin possession.  Sober since 2008, he has since launched The HerrenProject, a national anti-substance abuse campaign that includes the Project Purple initiative, which aims to encourage people recovering from drug addiction.  Herren was profiled on ESPN's award-winning…

Whiz Kids: Student Receives Full College Scholarship and 'Green Prom Challenge' Winners
