The once drug-addicted former professional basketball player speaks before a packed Montour Athletic Center.
Former NBA star Chris Herren said he used to be "one of those kids who talked and messed around" during school assemblies. Herren, whose drug addiction led to his firing from the Boston Celtics' roster a decade ago, spoke to students in grades 6 to 12 at the Montour School District about his descent into substance abuse. At the assembly, he urged students to avoid use of controlled substances. Herren told students he overdosed four times and at the height of his addiction had a "$25,000 a day" pill habit. He has been convicted of seven felonies. Herren also formerly played for the Denver Nuggets and in a European professional league. "I spent every dollar I ever earned playing basketball on drugs," Herren said. "I spent every dollar my…

School officials would like to hear more details before granting approval.
Approval of a trip by a student group often is routine business for school officials. But one such item on which Montour School Board is scheduled to vote has drawn a few questions and calls for clarification. As the board was wrapping up its agenda planning Thursday night, an upcoming trip by the high school marching band prompted a round of discussion, primarily because the destination is the Bahamas. Board member Duane Faith requested clarification of the proposed action, which is stated on the meeting’s printed agenda: “Approve the Montour High School Marching Band 2013 Spring Trip.” “I want to be very clear on what I am asked to approve,” Faith said. Dr. Donald Boyer, superintendent, assured the board that the measure merely grants …

Construction update: Work is on pace at the new Montour Athletic Center, and district officials may have found a temporary home for the high school swim team.
The Montour School District expects to open its revamped athletic center to the students by February 2013, said Jason Burik, assistant to district superintendent Donald Boyer. Construction on the $17.14 million project is running on schedule, Burik said. No opening date is set. "Very tentatively, we're looking at the end of January or beginning of February and we will be planning a grand opening for the public," Burik said. The district in December 2011 began renovations on the building, which includes a swimming pool, elevated indoor track and gymnasium. The Ross Township-based Thomas & Williamson Program Management and Apostolou Associates are heading the project. Both firms also worked on the district's extensive high school …
