Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, have released a joint letter to the CEO of US Airways . In the letter addressed to company CEO and chairman W. Douglas Parker, the local Congressmen request additional information on US Airways' plans for its Moon Township flight operations center.  The flight control center, which employs more than 700, could close as a result of a planned merger between US Airways and American Airlines. The facility opened in 2008 with the help of $16.25 million in public subsidies.  Read the full letter below:  Dear Mr. Parker, Southwestern Pennsylvania is the proud home to the Pittsburgh International Airport, the US Airways flight operations center, maintenance facility, and …

The US Airways you speak of ceased to exist, when America West purchased the old US Airways during the latter's second bankruptcy. Truth be told PIT had the 1st or 2nd highest fees per passenger in the country, and US Airways was sinking after 9/11. US Airways told the Allegheny County Airport Authority that they needed relief, or they'd need to shift traffic to CLT and PHL (US Airways was …   more ›

Congressmen, Military Leaders Focus on the 911th Airlift Wing's Future

Elected officials and military leaders held a news conference focusing on preserving the Moon base beyond 2014.

U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, joined by elected officials and military leaders, stopped by the 911th Airlift Wing Monday morning to deliver a message about the future. According to KDKA, Murphy was greeted with a standing ovation as he was joined by U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Swissvale and other elected officials and military leaders at the Moon base, where the focus was on keeping the base open beyond 2014. Murphy announced last week that a planned 2013 closure of the base will not occur and that operations at the base will continue into next year. The 911th has faced previous closure attempts, including one in 2005. Faced with sequestration and other military budget cuts, local officials told KDKA the 911th and the 171st Air Refueling Wing is a …

Construction Back on Track at Moon Military Commissary

The opening of a Moon Township military commissary has been pushed back after contractors failed "delineate responsibilities," according to officials.

A series of setbacks in the construction of a 43,000 square-foot Moon Township military commissary has delayed the facility's planned opening.  The commissary, which will serve as a grocery store for 170,000 military personnel in the tri-state region, was originally slated to open in October 2013, but work stoppages have pushed back that opening date to the spring of 2014, officials said.   Crews first broke ground in August on the $17 million facility, which will sit at the corner of University Boulevard and the Interstate 376 Business Route. Work on the commissary had reached a "near standstill" in recent weeks, according to a joint statement released by Reps. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, Congressmen …

Murphy, Doyle Support 'Fiscal Cliff' Deal

The Moon and Robinson-area members of Congress vote in favor of legislation to stave off steep, automatic tax increases and spending cuts.

Congressmen Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, cast votes in favor of American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, legislation put in place to avert a so-called "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases and federal spending cuts. Congress on Tuesday night approved the bill in a 257 to 167 vote. The plan maintains tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 and couples earning less than $450,000, and increases taxes for those earning more. President Barack Obama signed the deal into law early Thursday morning. Of the vote, 172 Democrats, including Doyle, and 85 Republicans, including Murphy, favored the bill. The law's passage capped off weeks of gridlocked negotiations as Washington lawmakers wrangled over …

Officials Break Ground on Moon Military Commissary

Construction will soon be under way on a University Boulevard military commissary, marking the end of a six-year battle to bring the facility to Moon.

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton, said it was a testament to perseverance.  Members of Pennsylvania's Congressional delegation and military officials from across the region earlier today attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the long-awaited Moon Township military commissary.  The 43,000 square-foot facility, set to open in the fall of 2013, will house a grocery story for more than 170,000 military members and their families in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.  The regional hub will be located at the corner of University Boulevard and the Interstate 376 Business Route in Moon and will more than double the size of Oakdale's Charles E. Kelly Commissary, which is slated to close.  The effort to bring the new commissary to Moon has been in…

Lawmakers, Supporters Insist 'Fight Not Over' to Save the 911th Airlift Wing

Congressional officials ask President Obama to intervene and block the closing of the Moon-based installation.

Lawmakers and local military supporters said efforts to save the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing are not over, despite an Air Force announcement earlier this week that the base will close in 2013.  Members of Pennsylvania's congressional delegation in a letter have asked President Barack Obama to intervene and block the closing of the base, which would result in the loss of 1,122 military and 281 civilian jobs.  Officials called the planned closure a "devastating mistake for the military, the taxpayers and the Pittsburgh region," in their letter to the president.  The Pentagon plans to cut $8.7 billion from the Air Force's 2013 budget. The 911th is targeted for closure because of the age of its eight C-130 tactical aircraft, which were …
