Moon Volunteer Firefighters Host Annual Lenten Fish Fry

The fire department kicks off its annual fundraiser.

The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department on Friday will kick off its annual fish fry for the Lenten season.  The fish fry, run by firefighters and volunteers, will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 pm. each Friday of the Lenten season, wrapping up March 29, at the Moon Township Public Safety Building, 1000 Beaver Grade Road. The event serves as one of the fire department's largest yearly fundraisers.   All food on the menu is available for order-in or take-out.  St. Malachy, Forest Grove Road, Kennedy.  St. Joseph's, Fifth Avenue, Coraopolis.  St. James, Walnut Street, Sewickley.      Know of any other local fish fry events this Lent? Ash Wednesday Services in Moon, Robinson

Local churches plan services marking the start of Lent.

For those commemorating Ash Wednesday, we have a list of churches and services observing the day:   At St. James Church, 200 Walnut St. Sewickley, Ash Wednesday Mass will be celebrated at 6:45 a.m., 9 a.m., noon (ashes only) and 7 p.m. At St. Margaret Mary Church, at 1 Parish Place, Moon, Ash Wednesday Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. At St. Catherine of Sienna Church, at 199 McGovern Blvd., Crescent, Ash Wednesday Mass will take place at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. St. Joseph Church, 1313 Fifth Ave., Coraopolis, will distribute ashes at 8 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. Mass. Holy Trinity, at 5718 Steubenville Pike, Robinson, will hold mass at 8:15 a.m.

And the Readers' Choice for the Favorite Area Fish Fry Is ...

You vote for your favorite place to catch a fish fry.

This week Moon Patch asked residents to vote for the best fish fry in the area. The results are in. Drum roll, please! After taking a look at the poll results, we've dubbed the Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department's fish fry at the Moon Public Safety Building as the best fish fry in the community.  St. Joseph's Church in Corapolis came in second. The township fire department also received an honorable mention from voters over in Sewickley Patch.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Here are a list of services planned at area churches.

Lent is the season of reflection and fasting leading to Easter. Moon Patch brings you a list of area churches offering services on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. Scottish Composer Creates Big Music in a Small Church

Alastair Stout's impact on the region extends beyond his role as the music director of the Coraopolis United Methodist Church.

Since taking up residence in Coraopolis nine years ago, Alastair Stout has made his mark on the Coraopolis United Methodist Church and the region beyond it. Stout, 36, who serves as the congregation's music director, most recently has organized the church's Lenten Concert Series. Its next performance is scheduled for April 13.  He's also earned the admiration of his fellow musicians in the church. "He's one of the most musical people I've ever met," soprano Amy Stabnau said while sitting next to Stout after a recent piano recital. Stout, a native of the Shetland Isles off the Scottish coast, arrived in Coraopolis in 2002.
