Police in Robinson and Moon were among a dozen area departments who took part in an active-shooter training exercise Wednesday at South Fayette High School. WTAE reports the drill was designed "look and feel like a real emergency," simulating how police would react if a gunman entered a high school. From WTAE: “You can never be completely prepared for every situation, but we are trying to do what we can to be familiar with the school and keep the officers fresh with their training,” said South Fayette Township patrolman John Leininger. The new RMU major trains students to conduct digital investigations.
Robert Morris University will now offer a degree in cyber forensic science. The Moon-based university on Wednesday formally launched the program, which is aimed at training students in information security and the basics of criminal investigations. The bachelor's of science program will be the first of its kind in Western Pennsylvania, said RMU spokesman Jonathan Potts. Cyber forensics pertains to the recovery of legal evidence found on computers and digital storage devices, according the university. Courses for the major were first offered to students this fall. After completing six-day camp, 55 honored as State Police Cadets.
Two Moon Township teenagers graduated as Pennsylvania State Police Cadets at the annual Allegheny County Camp Cadet in Sharpsburg. State Trooper Robin Mungo said Moon residents Travis Sparks and Paige Duffy, both 14, completed the six-day camp July 30. The camp is organized by Mungo and the state police barracks in Moon Township. Mungo said the camp included both a physical training regimen as well as preparation for a career in law enforcement. As part of their training, cadet-trainees were asked to investigate a mock homicide. Pittsburgh Police, Allegheny County Police, and the United States Secret Service were among the law enforcement agencies that took part in the camp, Mungo said. Man indicted by federal grand jury.
A Sharon Road resident is charged with illegally returning to the United States and could face deportation. Jaime Silva-Martinez, 31, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh this week on one count of illegally re-entering the country. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted an investigation into his residency earlier this year. Silva-Martinez was first removed from the U.S. in April 2007 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the indictment. He returned to the country and was again deported in March 2009. He was discovered most recently living in Moon on May 1, 2010. If convicted, Silva-Martinez faces a maximum two-year prison sentence and a maximum $250,000 fine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul E…
