Lawmakers are again working to stave off a closure of the Moon Township air reserve station.
The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee has endorsed efforts to prevent the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing from closing down. Rep. Buck McKeon, R-CA, today urged Air Force officials to halt efforts to close the air wing as a cost-cutting measure. According to a statement from McKeon: Installations like the Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station have been vital to supporting our men and women deployed in harms way. New concepts in warfare have made our soldiers on the ground more dependent than ever on airlift assets like Pittsburgh's C-130s. The Air Force didn't take those missions into account when they offered their plans to cut inventory earlier this year. Congress has directed them to correct that error and fully appreciate the …

The Congressman criticizes the Air Force for its plans to shutter the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing.
Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, told members of the House Armed Services Committee Tuesday that closing the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing would be "like an NFL coach being told to cut its roster by removing its first string." Murphy argued against the Air Force's planned closure of the installation, slated to take place by the end of 2013. The Congressman touted recent Iraq and Afghanistan deployments by members of the base during his testimony before the committee. Murphy and other members of the Pennsylvania delegation are attempting to prevent the closing of the airlift wing, which would eliminate more than 1,100 military personnel positions. The base closure is a part of an effort to drastically cut federal defense spending. The…

Murphy's office said he will argue against the military's planned closure of the Moon air base.
Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, is slated to testify today before the House Armed Services Committee on the Air Force's planned closure of Moon's 911th Airlift Wing. The committee is in the process of crafting its National Defense Authorization Act for 2013. Murphy is expected to argue in his remarks that the 911th is one of the most cost-effective military installations in the country, according to a statement from his office. The 911th is set to close in 2013. The closure will eliminate more than 1,100 military and 280 civilian positions. The base was targeted for close as a part of a plan to cut $8.7 billion from the Air Force's 2013 fiscal budget. The 911th, which makes use of runways at Pittsburgh International Airport, has the …

What is the use of having a congressman there for 10 years if he can't stand up for our community? I'm tired of all the radio and TV ads touting this strong conservative values. How much has the debt increased in the last 10 years? Time to impose term limits. Throw them all out. Vote for Feinberg!   more ›
