The NCAA tournament wraps up Saturday at Consol Energy Center.
The Robert Morris University-hosted Frozen Four Tournament at Consol Energy Center could have an $11 to 13 million economic impact on the Pittsburgh region, according to a university official. Marty Galosi, RMU assistant athletic director, said the tournament, running at the arena through Saturday, is expected to bring more than 13,000 college hockey fans to Pittsburgh. Galosi said the university secured a bid in 2012 to host the tournament, which marks Pittsburgh's first NCAA championship. Moon beats Montour in an 8-to-3 matchup.
High school hockey players are not supposed to play a game with a heavy heart, but there was no way to avoid that on Thursday night, when Moon beat Montour, 8-3. The game opened as both teams joined for a moment in silence for the late younger brother of Montour goaltender Brandon Heitzenrater. Moon head coach Craig Bioni said both teams were in pain during the game—senior night for the Tigers. “A lot of these guys know each other from Moon and Montour,” Bioni said. “It was a sad night for us also.” Nine seniors played their final home game for Moon (6-0 division, 10-6-3 overall), which dominated on home ice and clinched a first-round bye in the Class AA Penguins Cup. Montour (0-6 division, 1-18 overall) finished its season Thursday. Moon …

Craig Bioni reflects on coaching his sons—both on and off the ice.
When they’re at the ice rink, Craig and Justin Bioni have a typical athlete-instructor bond, but that changes when the game ends. “We live five minutes from the (Airport Ice Arena) and when your dad is the coach, it’s a long ride home,” Craig jokingly said. Justin Bioni, of the Moon Area High School varsity hockey program, is one of five high school hockey players in the PIHL Class AA division to be coached by his father, Craig. The two are making the most of the experience. “It’s great (playing for my dad). I love it,” said Justin, a defenseman for the Tigers. “Playing for other coaches is pretty good, but my dad will push me to do what I need to do in order to get better, and he’s always on me, but I like it.” Craig, who is also in …

Teachers in the Moon Area School District will take on the Moon Hockey Club this weekend to raise money for prom activities.
Moon Area School District faculty and students will take to the ice this weekend in a hockey game fundraiser for the high school's upcoming prom season.
