A Fourth of July for Two

Columnist Gab Bonesso shares some Fourth of July memories of her father: The Great ZamBeanie!

Independence Day was always a signature holiday for my family. My parents were notorious party-throwers and their Fourth of July blowouts were usually the talk of the town.  It probably had something to do with the fact that my father would drive to West Virginia each year to purchase illegal fireworks. He would call himself, “The Great ZamBeanie” (combining Zambelli fireworks with his nickname: Beanie) and after an afternoon of “spirits” he would turn the sky into a symphony of lights.  As a kid our Fourth of July parties were my version of Disney World. It was the main thing that I looked forward to every summer and I could always count on my parents to go above and beyond the year prior. Our neighborhood would be lined up on both …

Zambelli's Safety Tips for Independence Day

Zambelli Fireworks offered Patch these safety tips.

Fireworks are an integral part of Fourth of July celebrations all over the country. For aspiring back yard pyrotechnicians, here are some safety tips from the professionals at Zambelli Fireworks.  Keep in mind—only hand, ground sparklers and other novelty fireworks are allowed to be purchased or used without a permit in Pennsylvania. Leave the rest to the Zambelli's. Cherry bombs, M-80s, M-100s and silver salutes are all illegal. Tampering with fireworks or trying to create your own without the required permission and knowledge is also illegal.  Always make sure you purchase fireworks from a dealer approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. These vendors are regulated and can provide legal and safe entertainment for your …

We're Having a Heatwave

The current heatwave is making columnist Gab Bonesso a little loopy!

Hey! What are the lyrics to that old Irving Berlin song? Something like, “We’re having a heat wave. A tropical heat wave. The temperature’s rising. It isn’t surprising. She certainly can can-can.” Now I don’t know what dancing the can-can has to do with the temperature, but I do know that we are currently in the midst of a full-blown heat wave here in Western PA! I am looking at my seven-day weather application on my MacBook and temperatures in the early 90s/late 80s will be continuing through the Fourth of July holiday. Coincidentally this is the first summer my mother has decided not to open our swimming pool in 32 years. Great timing, Ma! In her defense, she opened the pool last year and it was probably only used four times during the …

Moon July 4 Goes Out with a Bang

The township's annual festival drew nearly 12,000 people.

Nearly 12,000 people crowded into Moon Park Monday evening for the township's annual Fourth of July Celebration.  Festival-goers took in performances from country music artist Chuck Wicks and Moon natives Brooke Annibale and Sarah Marince.  More families poured into the park and lined Ewing Road nearby to catch the Zambelli Fireworks display at nightfall.  Dana Kasler, director of Moon's Parks and Recreation department, said the event ran smoothly.  "It was a great turn out," Kasler said. "It just seems like everyone is really excited [tonight]."

Ewing Road On-Ramp to Open for Moon Festival

The ramp will open temporarily to alleviate traffic congestion.

The Interstate 376 East Ewing Road on-ramp will re-open Monday to accommodate the Moon Township July 4 Celebration.  The Allegheny County Airport Authority earlier this month closed the ramp to install a traffic roundabout at the I-376 and Ewing Road intersection. Construction on the $950,000 project is expected to be completed by October.  Moon spokeswoman Meghan McNamara said township officials worked with the airport authority to temporarily open the ramp in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion from the July 4 celebration Monday at Moon Park.  The ramp will close again for motorists Tuesday morning.  Ewing Road will also be closed to motorists from Beaver Grade to Coraopolis Heights Road from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday.
