Wood Burner Ignites Blaze on Cherrington Lane

Firefighters from across the region respond to Moon Township basement fire.

Embers from a basement wood burner ignited a fire Saturday in a Cherrington Lane home, said Moon Fire Chief John Scott.  Scott said no one was injured in the blaze, which was contained to the basement of the home at 10 Cherrington Lane.  The home's residents were away when the fire began shortly after 4 p.m., he said. The property is owned by Kurt and Jacquelyn Gottschalk, according to Allegheny County property records.  A neighbor who was watching the family's pets alerted authorities to the blaze. Kurt Gottschalk later praised the quick response of firefighters, saying he was grateful for their efforts on behalf of his family and dogs. Moon Volunteer Firefighters to Hold Memorial Service

Residents may attend the ceremony today at the Moon Municipal Building.

The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11:50 a.m. today at the Moon Municipal Building on Beaver Grade Road.  Members of the department will place memorials for fallen soldiers and firefighters at the doorstep of the municipal building. The annual event is open to the public.  Coraopolis VFW Post 402 will visit area cemeteries today, including Resurrection and Sharon cemeteries, to commemorate members of the military.  Check back with Patch tomorrow for coverage of local Memorial Day events.
