Columnist Gab Bonesso did not attend her Montour class reunion last month. However, she did attend a high school reunion of sorts ...
On the Friday night following Thanksgiving I skipped my Montour High School reunion. I was in town, I had zero plans for the night but I still didn’t go. Why? Probably because as an adult I finally know myself. I know that while I love the idea of a high school reunion, actually showing up sounds horrible. This has nothing to do with my former classmates. They’re great. I just hate social gatherings in general. I’m a bit of a recluse. Back in the day I didn’t hang out with the students unless I was performing with them (i.e. soccer games, the school musical, or band concerts). I only went to two dances—prom and homecoming. That was mostly for my mom because I thought she deserved a “normal” daughter for a change. I’m an extrovert and a …

Columnist Gab Bonesso takes notice of an outbreak of mall rats at The Mall at Robinson. Have you?
To the shock and chagrin of many, I am not a fan of Kevin Smith movies. That’s odd because he’s made movies like Mall Rats and Clerks and I’m comedian who was raised in the suburbs who loves both sarcasm and death. I guess I always thought his films were indicative of his slacker generation (i.e. lazy). Indeed he says the film “Slacker” was his inspiration to become a director. I evoke Kevin Smith and his so-so cinema this week because I have noticed an odd phenomenon at the Mall at Robinson. Has anyone else noticed that we have actual mall rats? Mall rats (besides being one of Mr. Smith’s most famous movies) are basically preteen/teenage kids who hang at the mall for hours upon hours, yet generally buy nothing. Well at least that is an …

Communications students try to give up social media for 48 hours.
Lisa Folli, a freshman at Robert Morris University, never noticed how glued she was to her smartphone until this week. "Most of the time when we talk to people, we're not looking at them—we're looking at our phones," Folli said. "I actually started to look at people and see their reactions when I was talking to them." Folli and her classmates in an RMU survey of mass communications course this week turned off their cell phones and logged out of their Twitter, Facebook and Pintrest accounts for 48 hours, testing just how much technology intertwines with their lives. For many students, the assignment was a lot easier said than done. Instructor Yvonne Bland challenged the class to go two days without texting, cell phone calls or social …

Columnist Gab Bonesso combines her birthday celebration with the flu and has an excellent result.
Birthdays have always reminded me of New Year’s Day in the sense that New Year's Day is spent both reflecting on the past and dreaming of the future. It’s the day where an individual claims possession to an entire year. For most people, it is a day of celebration. For me, it is a day of extreme misery. My birthday was this past Thursday. I’ve never really enjoyed birthdays, to be honest. My parents and family have always gone above and beyond to help me celebrate, but alas, I just hate getting older. I always have. The year I turned 4, I was inconsolable. I loved being 3 years old, and I could not imagine what age 4 had in store for me. I apparently spent the day in my room not taking calls and demanding my “bubba” (code for my bottle of …

Do you know the passwords to your children's social media accounts?
I have a 15-year-old who is going to be a sophomore in high school this year. She is a very mysterious creature. She spends hours behind the closed door of her room, listening to music, being on the computer, texting and talking on the phone with friends. She could be talking about boys, or she could be looking up the details of a Sewickley-area flash mob, for all I know. A friend of mine said she has the passwords to any and all email and social networking accounts for her children. Another friend forbids her children to have Facebook accounts. I held out as long as possible for my daughter to get a cell phone, and it was only because of convenience that I gave her uncle the green light to buy her one as a gift. When I was thinking about …
Patch Parenting Columnist Sarah Beth Martin discusses some of the strange baby names out there and laughs about her own daughter's name.
Jaws dropped and eyebrows raised last month when the story hit the press that Israeli parents Lior and Vardit Adler named their baby after the “Like” button on Facebook. Some folks chuckled while others sneered and questioned the parents’ reasoning and motives. The Adlers have two other daughters, Dvash (from the Hebrew word for honey) and Pie (as in “apple pie”). Baby Like joins them as the youngest and most famous of the Adler daughters. Little Like already has a Facebook community page where her parents post updates about her personal life and public life. It’s filled with thousands of comments from people around the globe, many of whom overdo it in terms of expressing how much they “Like” or like Like. At the time I write this, 5,228 …

Unofficial (unsanctioned) reunions are a common phenomenon. Students often prefer to arrange these themselves and often half the class attends a get together at a hall or restaurant sans teacher/admin attendance.   more ›
