Moon voters re-elect Andrew Gribben to the township Board of Supervisors and unseat four incumbent school board members.

As the results rolled in over MCA-TV, the crowd erupted in applause. Moon Township Republicans gathered Tuesday evening at the Montour Heights Country Club, where they celebrated overwhelming victories on the Moon Area School Board and Moon Township Board of Supervisors in municipal races. Members of the self-described "Citizens for Education" ticket unseated incumbent Moon Area School Board members Mark Scappe, Lisa Wolowicz, Rosemarie Varsanik, James Donohue and first-time candidate Danny Barefoot. Scappe has served on the board since 1999. In January, Gia Tatone, Dennis Harbaugh, Mike Olszewski, Laura Schisler and Samuel Tranter will begin four-year terms on the board. Interesting how you, in Ohio, read that this new board is going to censor books. I live here, in the school district, and I never read that information, and I've been keeping up with the goings-on of the issues. I personally know two of the new board members and I'm very happy to have them on my side. They understand from where most of the parents are coming and can empathize. I can't say the …   more ›

Update: Candidates Take to the Polls on Municipal Election Day

Voter turnout has been mixed, candidates say.

Denny Lewis said after 60 years as a Crescent resident, he decided to run today as a write-in candidate for the township's Board of Commissioners.  "It's a long shot, I know, but I figured I'd come out today and give it a shot," Lewis said between talking to voters outside the Crescent Township Building, which serves as a polling location. Lewis is the township's emergency management coordinator and works for US Airways.   Candidates and campaign workers today are staked out at polling locations in Moon and Crescent, where many said voter turnout has been moderate.   Samuel Tranter, a candidate for Moon Area School Board on the Citizens for Education Ticket, said he saw an uptick in senior citizens taking to the polls early this morning…

School Board Candidates Clash Over Classroom Literature

A group of candidates for the Moon Area School Board says more needs to be done to ensure only age-appropriate material reaches students. Current board members, meanwhile, dismiss those claims.

Laura Schisler, a candidate for Moon Area School Board, said she’s heard it from district parents and grandparents. “I have grandparents who will say to me, ‘I’m really concerned about what my child is learning,' ” Schisler said. “It’s really interesting to see how parents and grandparents alike are responding to this.” Schisler and her running mates for the Moon Area School Board said concern is growing among parents who fear that novels and textbooks in the district contain themes too explicit for school-age children. Republican nominees Schisler, Gia Tatone, Samuel J. Tranter, Dennis Harbaugh, Ron Steele and Mike Olszewski are vying in the Nov. 8 school board race against incumbent board members and Democratic nominees Lisa Wolowicz, …
