Olympic Gymnast to Lunch with Fan at Local Panera

McKayla Maroney, a gold-winning Olympic medalist, will meet with two fans next week at a local Panera.

Fans of U.S. Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney can enter to win a meet-and-greet with the gold-winning athlete at a local Panera Bread restaurant.  Maroney, who won gold during the 2012 London Olympic games, will perform Nov. 13 during the 2012 Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.  Fans can enter to win a lunch meeting that day with Maroney at a local Panera restaurant and two tickets to her performance at CONSOL.  Click here to enter the contest. Local Inventor Hopes to 'Get on the Shelf' at Walmart

Wiper Sleeve the creation of a Moon resident who has entered the product in a competition that he hopes will lead to shelf space at the giant retailer.

Jack Rees said the idea was so simple he should have thought of it sooner.  One winter day Rees watched his wife slide plastic grocery bags over her car's windshield wipers to prevent ice from building up on them.  "And so I started to do the same thing, but plastic bags didn't fit on my [vehicle's] wipers," he said.  So instead, Rees, a 59-year-old retired postal worker from Moon, bought some fabric from a local store to craft his own wiper cover — and Wiper Sleeve was born.  "Think of it as a sleeve that you would slide up over your arm, but instead, you put it on your wiper," Rees said. "It's a very simple product." The Wiper Sleeve is now one of more than 4,000 products in the running in Walmart's Get on the Shelf competition. …

Moon Tigers Win Weekly Y108 Contest

The radio station will broadcast live from tonight's varsity football game.

Radio station Y108 announced that the Moon Area School District has won its weekly "Boys of Summer" competition, beating out Seneca Valley, Mars Area and Steel Valley. Y108's Wookie will broadcast live from tonight's game, which will pit Moon against Ambridge at 7:30 p.m. at Tigers Stadium. The high school is still in the running against other districts to win the main prize, a pep rally hosted by American Idol finalist Casey James. Vote here for the district to win the pep rally.

Aviation Art Contest Entries Needed

The state Department of Transportation's Bureau of Aviation is sponsoring the contest—and entries are due soon!

Young artists are invited to display their talents and learn about aviation through an annual art contest sponsored by the state Department of Transportation's Bureau of Aviation. “Aviation is an important industry in Pennsylvania, and this is a great opportunity for kids to learn about it while having fun,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. "Aviation’s Value to My Community" is the theme of this year’s contest. Entries will be judged in two divisions: first through third grades, and fourth and fifth grades. Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 14. There will be 22 statewide winners, with one winner from each division selected from each of PennDOT’s 11 district offices.
