Robinson: How About a Little 'Generosity of Spirit?'

Columnist Gab Bonesso is just looking for a little good will this holiday season and, well, maybe a mini iPad too.

One of the most famous, over-quoted lines in motion picture history is from the 1992 Penny Marshall film A League of Their Own. The quote goes as follows: “Are you crying? There’s no crying in baseball.” One character declares something to be true, whether it is or not, because it’s humorous. Comedy always trumps fact. There is no such rule. The umps would have to throw fans out of the game who get misty eyed while singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”   I bring up this quote today because I feel like I want to walk into the Robinson Township Market District Giant Eagle and scream something similar to the customers of the store:  “Are you being mean? There is no mean in Christmas!” Christmas used to bring out the best in people. As a kid …

Impact Christian Church Hosts 'Operation Hope' Dinner

A Moon Township church hopes to make the Christmas season brighter for local families in need.

Moon Township's Impact Christian Church will bring Christmas a few weeks early to members of the community in need at its first "Operation Hope" dinner on Saturday. "We'll have turkey, ham, stuffing, pie, sort of everything you would have for a Thanksgiving dinner," said student ministry coordinator Zach Shidemantle.  Church volunteers have spent recent weeks reaching out to area food pantries, clinics and other organizations to spread the word of the event.  Shidemantle said last Christmas season, the church worked with the nonprofit Light of Life, sponsoring a clinic for the homeless in downtown Pittsburgh. This year, the church wanted to make it's mark closer to home, he said. "There are people in Moon struggling to put a meal together…

Nearby: Nutbrown’s Christmas Tree Farm Tradition Continues in Collier Township

Find out where you can cut down a Christmas tree in the area.

Nutbrown’s Christmas Tree Farm in Collier Township, one of the only places around where you can choose and chop down your own tree, is open again for the holiday season. The tree farm is drawing a crowd with unseasonably warm weather over the weekend. Henry Nutbrown, who owns the 12-acre farm along McMichael Road with his wife, Sue, said he’ll take this warmer weather even though most of the customers are pining for the white stuff. “Everybody comes out and says they wish we had a little snow. Not me,” Nutbrown told Chartiers Valley Patch. “I’ll take some snow on the 24th of December. It can snow as much as it wants then.” The farm, which Nutbrown’s parents purchased in 1939, has been selling Christmas trees since the late 1960s. It has …

Tis the Season: Yuletide Hunting in Robinson Township

Growing up in Robinson Township has caused columnist Gab Bonesso to associate gunshots with the holiday season.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Bing Crosby crooning in the distance, and jingle bells are all sounds that evoke the Christmas holiday. But if you are a resident of Western Pennsylvania, you need to add the sound of a shotgun to that list. BOOM! Ho, ho, ho … I hear hunters so it must mean that Christmas is around the corner! For as long as I can remember hunting season joins forces with the holiday season here in Robinson Township. I remember as a kid I would ask my mom why we always had the Monday after Thanksgiving off from school and she would simply answer, “it’s hunting season.” I’m not a total hunting novice. I’ve done my Warner Brothers research. I knew that hunting season generally involved a spastic duck named Daffy and a …
