Coast Guard Might Move its Headquarters to the Bridgeville Area

The region’s U.S. Coast Guard could be consolidating and moving its command and maintenance center to the Bridgeville area. But one federal lawmaker is questioning if that’s the best place for it to be located.

The region’s U.S. Coast Guard’s command and maintenance center could be coming to the Bridgeville area, but one federal lawmaker is questioning if that’s the best place for it to be located. Congressman Tim Murphy said the Coast Guard is expected to accept a bid this week to consolidate its three area centers into a building in or around the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center in Collier Township. “I question the wisdom of putting the Coast Guard headquarters so far from the water,” Murphy said in an exclusive interview to Patch.com. “They wanted to be in the Pittsburgh pool. It’s not near there.” Murphy, a Republican from Upper St. Clair, didn’t blame the Coast Guard, but said it’s the federal government’s General Services Administration …

Nearby: Women Arrested in Prostitution Sting at Massage Parlor

Police and the FBI had been monitoring 88 Spa in Bridgeville for months before raiding the massage parlor Tuesday and arresting three women. Here's the story you won't hear from TV news about what went into the prostitution sting.

Police heard rumblings of a prostitution ring at 88 Spa in Bridgeville not long after the massage parlor opened in the borough’s main business district in October 2011. But investigators said they had to be patient to collect evidence and then work with federal authorities to find out if the ring also involved human trafficking or organized crime. “We had info from neighboring businesses that it was pretty obviously what was going on there,” Bridgeville police Chief Chad King said. “But knowing something and proving it are two different things.” By last July, King said they had enough evidence to make a case and contacted the FBI to ramp up the investigation. Federal investigators set up surveillance on the spa located across from …

Nearby: Organic Farmer Catches ‘Acting Bug’

Troy Bogdan of Bridgeville says he caught the “acting bug” after a back injury sidelined him from working on his Crawford County organic farm last April. He played an extra in the new movie "Promised Land" that hit theaters Friday.

Troy Bogdan, an organic farmer living in Bridgeville, says he caught the “acting bug” after a back injury sidelined him from working on his Crawford County farm last year. An audition for a role as an extra last May has snowballed into a flurry of acting parts in several movies filming around western Pennsylvania, including the major production of “Promised Land,” which opened in theaters Friday morning. “I’ve been a fan of movies all my life, but I never thought I would be working for them,” Bogdan said. “It’s a hobby and we’ll see where it goes. I don’t have any expectations of being a movie star, but maybe it can lead to part-time income to supplement the farm income. I’ll do it as long as I’m still having fun.” The work started after …

Three police officers from Collier Township and Bridgeville are being hailed as heroes for stopping a woman from leaping to her death off an Interstate 79 overpass.

Three police officers from Collier Township and Bridgeville are being hailed as heroes for stopping a woman from leaping to her death off an Interstate 79 overpass and possibly injuring unsuspecting motorists below. Sgt. Robert Ferrence and Officer Steve Oberle of Collier, and Officer Roger Itzel of Bridgeville were awarded a commendation by Collier Township officials last week for their efforts to save the woman and prevent others from being hurt. Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said the officers received a call on Oct. 24 of a woman sitting on the I-79 overpass along Prestley Road with her feet dangling over the edge. Bridgeville Man Helps Save Memories

Ryan Tomazin recently started a business that scans photos and records so historical societies and families can keep those memories alive forever.

Everyone has boxes, folders and drawers full of memorable–and not so memorable–old photos. Ryan Tomazin is trying to help people organize them so they can enjoy them rather than just stuffing them away in closets. The Bridgeville man started a scanning business in January 2011 that he hopes will help people organize their old photos and help historical societies categorize thousands of records and pictures. “My job is to help them preserve their memories,” Tomazin said. “You link people together more.” Tomazin is currently volunteering his time to help the Bridgeville Area Historical Society archive thousands of photos, documents and other information so they can easily find them with an easy keyword search. He’s seen other area historical…

Firefighters from Bridgeville, Presto, Upper St. Clair and Moon Township just finished a class on how to use a specialized foam for chemical fires.

Firefighters from Moon Township, Presto, Upper St. Clair and Bridgeville finished their 16-hour refresher course on the “Class B” foam that is used for chemical fires that typically come from car crashes, train derailments or industrial accidents. The three South Hills departments have shared a trailer packed with the foam for several years, and Bridgeville fire Chief Bill Chilleo said it was about time to be recertified. “When you don’t play with something enough, you tend to forget,” he said. Moon also participated because it houses one of four regional …
