Local Bars Prep for the Super Bowl

Moon bartenders said the Steelers' success has caused business to spike.

If the AFC Championship was any indication, Viola's Italian Restaurant and Lounge should be packed come Super Bowl Sunday.  "It's been hit or miss lately," said bartender Nicole Scappe. "But we'll have a pretty big crowd for the Super Bowl." Scappe said last week's Steelers-Jets game packed the pub and eatery on the corner of Flaugherty Run  and Brodhead Road, and the staff is readying for big business on Feb. 6.  She said Viola's will have two bartenders on hand to serve the Super Bowl-sized crowds expected next week, and they're hoping a black-and-gold contest and free buffet will lure in Steeler devotees.  "It's for the person who wears the most black and gold," Scappe said of the contest. "They'll get a free bottle of liquor or …

Future of Trivia Pub Still Unclear

AutoZone is slated to acquire the property, but the 60-year-old bar may have to re-open in the meantime.

John Scanlon sat inside the empty Trivia Pub yesterday afternoon with the door locked. He said he came down for the afternoon to think about what the future may hold for the 60-year-old bar, which has been closed since December 11. Scanlon has owned the place for 25 years.  "I can come in here and just kind of think," he said. "I look around and I think we need new front doors, we need a new awning. Do I want to rip the bar out and put a new one in? There's a lot I could do." But for now, Scanlon isn't sure when, or if, those plans will come into fruition.
