Who's Your Hero?

Because the Red Cross is honoring everyday heroes—and is asking you for local candidates.

Heroes are all around us. They live and work right here in Western Pennsylvania. Ordinary people—some right here in Moon and Robinson—perform extraordinary deeds on a daily basis, however, these individuals often do not receive recognition for their noble deeds. However, the American Red Cross wants to applaud these courageous individuals by officially proclaiming them heroes at the fourth annual Red Cross Heroes Breakfast, to be held in Pittsburgh later this year.  The Red Cross is asking community members to nominate heroes. Individuals who have performed a heroic act—such as saving lives during an emergency or supporting disaster preparedness in their communities—between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 are eligible to be nominated.  This…

Michael Baker Awarded for U.S./Mexico Border Fence Project

The Moon-based firm oversaw construction on the fence, which serves as the largest U.S. Customs and Border Protection project in the country's history.

The Moon-based Michael Baker Corp. has been recognized for its work constructing a 500-acre fence along the United States/Mexico border. The Construction Management Association of America honored the firm ealier this month for its work overseeing construction on the border fence, which is the largest U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection infrastruction project in United States history.  The federally funded project involved construction of vehicle and pedestrian fencing along the southwest boarders of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.  The company worked with Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers for the project, which aims to quell illegal immigration across the U.S. border with Mexico.  The CMAA …

Moon Police Garner AAA Safety Awards

The department earned honors for its traffic safety promotion.

The Moon Township Police Department has earned AAA East Central's gold award for its community traffic safety efforts. The department is recognized this month with more than 40 other Pennsylvania police agencies for roadway safety enforcement. The awards are given annually to community police departments that conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics. The gold award is the second-greatest honor departments can earn in the program. Cranberry, Pittsburgh and Findlay were among the local departments who garnered the program's highest-ranking, platinum honors. AAA Safety Adviser J.J. Moon Filmmaker Places Third at International Film Festival

Joe Giacobello of Bello Productions will be recognized at the Indie Gathering International Film Festival in Ohio for his dark comedy, "Ultimate Reality."

Most people would say that a filmmaker with no budget is out of luck.  Joe Giacobello, however,  would prove them wrong.  Giacobello, a Moon-based actor and director, was recently awarded third place at the Indie Gathering International Film Festival in Westlake, Ohio, for his dark comedy, "Ultimate Reality." With nothing but a few dollars out of his own pocket, Giacobello created an award-winning feature-length film, starring himself and several other volunteer actors from the Pittsburgh area.  This is the second film his production company, Bello Productions, has made.  The first movie, "Doing Therapy," also won awards at several film festivals around the country, including Best Romantic Comedy at the Indie Gathering in 2006.  “Ultimate …
