The 12-year-old West Allegheny student from McDonald is vying in this third Kean Quest Talent Search—the 10th annual Gibsonia talent showcase for Pittsburgh-area vocalists. Last year, after performing a series of showtunes that wowed judges, Shane was named runner-up in the singing competition. He landed a finalist spot in his first year in the show. "He made it all the way to the finals last year, and he thought he'd give it another shot," said Shane's mother, Kim Treloar. The popular local talent competition, formerly known as Kean Idol, boasts singing sensation and ‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist Jackie Evancho and the face of the Eat n’ Park restaurant chain Sarah Marince, a Moon …

Jazz vocalist Lisa Ferraro will perform next month at the August Wilson Center.
For five years, Kennedy Township native Lisa Ferraro sang jazz on Friday nights at the James Street Pub on Pittsburgh's Northside. "(James Street Pub) had jazz and blues six nights a week. And if you aren't cutting as a performer, they won't be as flexible," Ferraro said of the crowds that would gather at the bar, a staple in Pittsburgh's jazz scene. "The thing about Pittsburgh is people aren't afraid to be honest with you," Ferraro said. Ferraro, who has etched a name for herself as a jazz vocalist, left the Pittsburgh region in 2009 to pursue her music career on the West Coast. "The more I travel, the more I appreciate Pittsburgh," she said. "The way it's been able to reinvent itself when so many other cities haven't is really a …

The film discusses the connection between ethnicity and family in modern-day Italian and Italian-American culture. The university premiered the film on Jan. 31 in its Massey Theater. View the trailer in the media above. From a statement on the documentary's release: "It’s a discovery of how fragile the bonds are that connect a family from generation to generation, from country to country, even as they search for ways to adapt to an ever-changing world. Over a period of years, Prof. DiLauro has conducted dozens of interviews, explored historical sites, sifted through archaeological artifacts, dug through…

The early-childhood education program pairs kids with parents to sing, dance and listen together.
These aren't your parents' music lessons, Lisa Rae Vaughan said. "Drums, jingle bells, shakers, scarves—it's very free-form," said Vaughan, a 20-year music educator from Hopewell. "This is not a teacher standing up there saying, 'You need to know this, or you need to know that.'" Vaughan is a certified instructor for "Music Together," an early-childhood music program that pairs kids with their parents as they learn basic musical concepts through singing, dancing and listening. "Music education supports all education," Vaughan said. "It helps them to develop those cognitive skills." Vaughan's program, offered at the Sweetwater Center for the Arts and the Laughlin's Children's Center in Sewickley, will now have a home at Arena's …
