The Felix family from Dallas, GA received thousands of votes to win Patch's Deck the House contest and $100,000 for the local school district.

In this year's Deck the House contest, the second time was the charm. Joseph Felix's home in Dallas, GA outshined the other 24 finalists to win the 2012 Deck the House contest and $100,000 for the Paulding County, GA school district. After placing second in the nationwide voting in the 2011 contest, the Felix home received nearly 11,000 votes this year to finally win Deck the House. The home, with 100,000 computer-animated holiday lights choreographed to Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," received about 300 more votes than a home in Coventry, R.I., which finished in second place. May was the platform’s most successful month to date, with nearly 12 million users and record-breaking revenue.
Patch—AOL’s platform of local news, information and engagement sites—today announced that May of 2012 was its most successful traffic and revenue period in the company’s history. Patch served a record 11.7 million users in May (comScore), representing a 14 percent increase over April (10.3 million users) and an 11 percent increase over its previous traffic record (10.6 million users in August 2011). In addition: • This 14 percent month-over-month growth outpaced the comScore Regional/Local category as a whole, which grew only 3 percent over the same time period. • Patch had a 12 percent increase in engagement (visits per unique visitor) from April to May. The student raised money for the golfer's prostate cancer charity.
A Moon Area High School senior had the chance to meet golf great Arnold Palmer. Derek Truninger, who is captain of the golf team, presented Palmer with an $850 check for his charity, the Arnie Army Foundation, which supports prostate cancer research. Tuninger raised the money by selling golf-themed clothing adorned with a 'What Would Arnie Do' slogan, according to the Moon Area School District. Derek will attend Cedarville University on a golf scholarship and plans to major in graphic design.

Moon students have been selected to perform in a host of regional events.
Moon Area High School band students last week performed in the Western Allegheny County Area Honors Band at Chartiers Valley High School. More than 160 local band students from area high schools participated in the annual event. The school district reports that 28 students took part in the event, which requires a rigorous two-day rehearsal. In addition, Moon junior Mark Bartus was selected as the first chair pianist in the PMEA honors jazz band earlier this month at Baldwin High School. Four students were selected to take part in Senior High District Band at North Allegheny High School, including senior trumpet Chris Nan, sophomore bassoon Adam Sniezek, sophomore French horn Nicholas Giralico and sophomore trombone Eric Homol. Two Moon Area High School students won top honors after competing in the Civics Fair 2011, a collaboration between Greater Pittsburgh Student Voices and the Youth Media Advocacy Project. Ashley Hall placed first for her entry focused on women's suffrage history. Allison Murphy placed third for an entry detailing the importance of student involvement in politics. Other students who participated in the event included Mai Casteveter, Anurag Purker and Dakota Talbott.

Snow, winter weather put area events on hold.
The Moon Area School District and the Rhema Christian School will open later today after a two-hour delay. Classes at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, however, are cancelled. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has placed the region under a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Snow showers with snow blowing across roadways is expected throughout the day as low pressure moves offshore from New England. According to the National Weather Service: An additional 4 to 8 inches of snow arre expected, and visibility for motorists is expected to be less than a mile. Wind gusts are measured at 10 to 15 mph, but could reach 30 mph by this afternoon. Check back with Moon Patch for more news as it develops!
