The Air Force has named the Moon Township base a candidate to receiving the Boeing KC-46A refueling aircraft.
The 171st Refueling Wing in Moon Township has been named a candidate base to receive new Boeing KC-46A refueling aircraft, according to an Air Force statement. Four other Air National Guard bases have also been selected as candidates to receive the KC-46A tanker, including installations in Ohio, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Kansas. The Air Force is seeking to establish two main mobile operating bases for the aircraft—one an Air National Guard base and the other an active-duty Air Force base. The 171st Refueling Wing is now home to more than a dozen KC-135 tankers, which were manufactured in the 1950s. The newer KC-46A is capable of carrying more cargo and fuel than its predecessor, according to the Air Force. Establishing the new …

Deborah Krall receives the Military Hero Award at annual Heroes Breakfast Thursday at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
Deborah Krall received many honors during her active duty with the Air National Guard—the Air Force Commendation Medal with two devices, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Humanitaria Services Award, among others. But it is as a civilian that she accepted the Military Hero Award Thursday during the fourth annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast held at the Lexus Club in Consol Energy Center in downtown Pittsburgh. Krall, a Youngwood resident, is Airmen & Family Readiness Program manager with the 171st Air Refueling Wing in Moon Township. But she also works closely with Operation: Military Kids, which provides a sense of community for children in military families affected by deployment. …

Defense Secretary Panetta halts aircraft retirements at base until Congress takes action.
Update: Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, announced today that the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon Township will remain open for at least one more year following a directive from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Panetta directed Air Force officials to delay any aircraft transfers or retirements until Congress takes action on the measure. The Secretary toured the 911th in June. The reprieve will maintain more than 1,100 military and 300 civilian jobs at the air base. From the Congressman: “This is welcome news for our region’s military families and an important recognition of the role Congress must play in authorizing base closures and major changes to our military’s structure. Even with this decision, our efforts are not finished, and I’m …

Murphy's office said two bill drafts could prevent the 911th Airlift Wing from closing in 2013.
Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, said two draft versions of two national defense bills could prevent the closure of the 911th Airlift Wing, according to his office. Murphy said if passed the bills would allow the Moon-based wing to keep each of its eight C-130 aircraft and prevent a downsizing of the neighboring 171st Refueling Wing. A defense appropriations bill slated for a vote next week before the House Appropriations Commitee would freeze any proposed retirements or transfers of Air Force aircraft, including the 911th's C-130s and the KC-135 refueling stratotankers at the 171st Refueling Wing. The House Committee on Armed Services also released a defense-planning bill for 2013 that stops all C-130 aircraft retirements planned …

Military supporters today gathered at a rally to protest the Air Force's planned closure of the 911th Airlift Wing.
Hundreds of military supporters gathered earlier today on Airside Drive in Moon to protest the planned 2013 closure of the 911th Airlift Wing. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, and Rep. Mark Critz, D-Johnstown, as well as members of Moon Township's Board of Supervisors were among those who gathered in Airport Cargo Building A to express opposition to the Air Force's decision to shutter the base. Despite its recently announced plans to close the Moon-based airlift wing, the Air Force has invested more than $58 million in infrastructure at the base in the past five years, according to Murphy's recent testimony before the House Armed Services Committee. The base tomorrow will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of Building …

Veterans meet with First Lady Michelle Obama.
Senior Airman Trisha Gresco of the 911th Airlift Wing said she was a little star-struck by her meeting today with Michelle Obama. "She was very friendly, nice, super sweet, warm," said Gresco, of Moon Township, after her encounter with the First Lady at the township's 911th Airlift Wing. Gresco, along with other local military personnel and their families, met Obama as she stepped off Air Force One after it touched down this afternoon at the 911th. Gresco said she didn't mention plans to close the 911th in 2013, but she said Obama spotted her 2-year-old daughter's bright-red T-shirt and its "Save the 911th" slogan. "I didn't say anything to her [about plans to shutter the base]," Gresco said. "But she said that she hopes it will …

The Moon Area School Board adopts a resolution condemning the base closure.
U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Upper St. Clair, fielded questions Monday night from members of the public and the Moon Area School Board on the upcoming closure of the 911th Airlift Wing. Murphy presented school board members with a report from Air Force officials outlining reasons for the base's closure, which Murphy said did not include a cost analysis of the Moon-based wing. Murphy said the report did not account for the more than $50 million spent on new facilities at the base since 2004 or its use of four 10,000-foot runways at Pittsburgh International Airport for an annual cost of $20,000. "How does this happen in Washington?" said school board member Jeff Bussard. "Is this some kind of sheer shortsightedness? It seems to escape logic…

The group plans to gather supporters to protest efforts to close the 911th Airlift Wing in Moon.
Supporters of the Moon-based 911th Airlift Wing plan to protest its upcoming closure at a rally Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. The Military Affairs Coalition of Western Pennsylvania will host a rally at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall on Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh. The group hopes to voice opposition to the Air Force's decision to shutter the 911th, eliminating all of its personnel and aircraft, and downsize the neighboring 171st Refueling Wing. Local and federal officials as well as veteran organization representatives will be on hand to speak at the event, according to a statement from the group. The Air Force announced plans to close the 911th earlier this year as a part of a nationwide initiative to…

Nice ! I'll be very surprised if Boeing sticks to its schedule, but I'm sure it would be a great reward to everyone there, flight and maintenance, to be given new hardware. Not only is it a more capable aircraft, but their training and experience would be more relevant to industry. The KC-46A is based on the Boeing 767 and will be using modern turbofan engines and a modern flight deck. Their …   more ›
