Stakeholders have announced the completion of the plan, which provides safe pedestrian and bicycle routes through McKees Rocks, Stowe, Coraopolis and Neville for residents and visitors.
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Friends of the Riverfront, the PA Environmental Council, Stowe and Neville townships, and McKees Rocks and Coraopolis boroughs have completed the Ohio River Trail Plan which provides safe pedestrian and bicycle routes through their communities for residents and visitors. The stakeholders made the announcement on Wednesday. Allegheny County will host a rally in celebration of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ second-round playoff series against the Ottawa Senators. The event will take place at noon on Tuesday, May 14, in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse located at 436 Grant St. in downtown Pittsburgh. Among celebration, a family mourns the death of a 23-year-old man during the half marathon.
Nearly 23,000 people participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday under a clear sky. James Kirwa of Kenya defended his full marathon title in 2 hours, 13 minutes, 37 seconds. “I flew in last night from Nairobi, but I thought that I could win since I knew the course and training had been going well,” said Kirwa. “I cramped a bit at the end, and maybe next year I will come back to try for the 2:10 event record.” American Mary Akor of Hawthorne, CA won the women’s 26.2 mile race in 2:37:35. In the half marathon, Kenyans Julius Kogo and Risper Gesabwa took the 13.1 mile titles in 1:02:32 and 1:13:16 respectively, with Kogo setting a course record. Nick Bulat recently had a kidney transplant and students responded with a fundraiser for the National Kidney Foundation.
Moon Area High School and Middle School track-and-field members, along with other students and staff, participated in a benefit walk for retired middle school math teacher and current track coach Nick Bulat on Thursday. Bulat recently underwent a successful kidney transplant. Champs Sports Network will sponsor a post-game fireworks show Friday at the Youthtowne sports complex in Clinton, following the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Sto-Rox baseball game. While there is no way to be sure, the show is said to be the first of its kind for WPIAL high school baseball. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic high school in Moon Township. "We are excited, the kids are excited, it should be a great event and something that goes well beyond the norm for a high school baseball game," Champs President Matt Farago said. Robert Morris basketball coach Andy Toole agreed on a three-year extension.
Robert Morris University basketball coach Andy Toole and the school's athletic director, Craig Coleman, have agreed on a contract extension through the 2017-18 season. Toole confirmed the agreement to the Post-Gazette after it was first reported by 93.7 The Fan. As a private school, Robert Morris did not release any financial details surrounding the contract. Toole had two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed in 2010, the P-G reports. In his three seasons as the Colonials' coach, Toole has compiled a 68-36 record. The Montour community is invited to the grand opening of the new Montour Athletic Center this weekend. The $17.14 million facility, which features a 360-degree indoor-arena that seats 1,500, as well as fitness rooms and sports offices, is located on the Clever Road campus of Montour High School. The facility also contains a pool, wrestling/cheerleading room and a golf center, according to Jason Burik, assistant to the superintendent. Construction on the facility began in December 2011. The grand opening celebration kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
