5 Things to Know this Week: Pittsburgh Author Event, Car Check & Fall Fun Fest

Patch gives you a rundown of what's going on around town this week.

1. No Classes Today at Moon

Students in the Moon Area School District will not attend school today, Oct. 7. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for today. 

2. Pittsburgh Author Event

Meet more than 10 authors of various genres at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at Barnes and Noble in Settlers Ridge, 800 Settlers Ridge Drive in Robinson. The authors will be speaking and signing books. 

3. Cops in Couture Fashion Show

Cops in Couture begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Mall at Robinson. The fashion show will highlight more than 70 police officers and K9 units from police departments throughout Allegheny County, including Robinson Police Chief Dale Vietmeier.  

The fashion show starts at 7 p.m. and benefits the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial of Allegheny County.

4. Car Check, Clothing Swap

On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Coraopolis United Methodist Church, 1205 Ridge Ave., Coraopolis, we will be conducting a Car Check from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is a free service that involves volunteers checking tire pressure, tire tread depth, oil levels, wiper fluid levels and lights. The church will also be hosting a Health Fair and a "Winter Clothes Swap" at the same time and location. 5. Fall Fun Fest

Moon Township Public Library invites residents from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Oct. 13 to spend a little quality time with family. The library is hosting its first Fall Fun Fest for all ages featuring Halloween inspired games, face painting, crafts and treats. Call 412-269-0334 or register online.

6. Project Purple Football Game

Montour varsity football takes on Blackhawk at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. The game will be broadcast on Root Sports, and fans are asked to wear their purple for Project Purple.

Project Purple is an initiative of The Herren Project, a non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player Chris Herren. Project Purple was launched to break the stigma of addiction, bring awareness to the dangers of substance abuse and shed light on effective treatment practices.
