Impact Christian Church Takes Part in 'Hoops for Hunger'

The local church is hoping to raise money for homeless and hungry residents in the Pittsburgh region.

Zach Shidemantle said it will be an event that leaves a mark both close to home and a world away.

The Moon-based will partner with Cranberry's Discovery Christian Church to hold the Hoops for Hunger basketball tournament April 28 at Mt. Gallitzin Academy in Baden.

Discovery Christian Church will donate half of the proceeds from the event to an orphanage in El Salvador while Impact Christian will use the other portion of the funds to combat hunger in the Pittsburgh region.

"So it's going to benefit hunger causes both globally and locally," said Shidemantle, who is organizing the event.

The churches are hoping to gather 64 teams for the tournament.

"We've got about 12 now so we've got a long way to go," Shidemantle said. "We're trying to get as many people involved as possible."

Shidemantle said the event is open to anyone interested in participating. The entry fee for individuals is $20 and concession money will also be donated. Participants can sign up on the day of the event.

Shidemantle said helping Allegheny County's hungry residents is a cause close to the members of Impact Christian Church.

"Being a Christian is to help take care of people in need," Shidemantle said. "We have a lot of passion toward feeding the hunger. An empty belly is a sad thing."
